I like Arcade Fire, The Shins, TV on the Radio, etc. I am looking for some fresh new indie bands (and by indie, i mean either underground, or off the radar in terms of radio play) to listen to. Any suggestions?

get Ted Leo & the Pharmacist's "Shake the Sheets", it will rock your face off.

The Hold Steady is another very good rock band, their album was one of my favorites from last year.

    don't forget her playing!!!

watching a gorgeous woman work a guitar like that sprung me for their entire 45 minute set :) haha. A chick that plays guitar is hot, a chick that plays guitar with feedback & fuzz is dead sexy!

I hear ya. Good music is good music, end of story. Whether a band is signed to an indie or a major label is completely irrelevent. I think the lines between indie and mainstream are becoming more and more blurred as the decade rolls on. A band like the Arcade Fire are constantly referred to as being "indie", "underground", or "off the radar", and yet at the same time they're one of the biggest bands in the world and have now become part of mainstream culture. Funny how that happens.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

the same thing happened with the term "Alternative" music as the 90s rolled on... it started out as an actual alternative and then became the mainstream

i agree it should only be about the music

Allow me to clarify the word indie- by indie i mean under the radar. I don't really use "indie" to classify a certain sound, because like many of you said, good music is good music. When I hear indie, I think of music that isn't totally in the mainstream. And for that, I'll continue to use the word.

well i think you could scratch the shins of the list already, because i don't think they are too under the radar anymore. their new album has been promoted quite well with advertising and a new video on mtv. not that there is anything wrong with that. although i'm pretty sure they are still on sub-pop which is an indie label. so i guess they are still an indie band.

heh usually i read these threads just to see how many people do the "i am going to name as many obscure bands that are better than anything you like" replies.

its usually indie or goth that people do that.. however, this thread has so far disappointed me!

someone name 20 obscure bands to make this a real thread about indie music please!

    Do you listen to Radiohead?

Those 'indie' bands don't even sound like rip offs.. completely different.

    Afrirampo (japanese)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (obscure if you aren't english or australian)

Neither of them are technically indie I don't think (Afrirampo might be.. I believe they're on a label started by Acid Mother's Temple which would probably make them indie) but there's 2 gems of obscurity for you.
