Are Smashing Pumpkins worth seeing 3 times in one week?

Are Smashing Pumpkins good enough to see three times in one week? I have a ticket to see them in Cleveland and then again two nights in a row at Massey Hall in Toronto. During the Toronto stint, they will be playing an entirely different setlist each night and hopefully I'll get some different songs in Cleveland that I won't get in Toronto.

I love most of their albums but I have never seen them live. Some people on here have said they're not as good live as in the studio. Plus there are only two members left from the original band. And I have a scheduling conflict at work so I don't know if it's worth it to call in sick to work plus spend about an extra $100 to drive up to Toronto and spend a couple nights there. Any opinions?
...And he who forgets will be destined to remember.

...I swear I never took it for granted. Just thought of it now.

Listen to some of the '08 shows and determine for yourself if they are worth seeing live. Everyone has their own opinions, so have an informed one.

ive love the pumkins, but have never seen them live. but im voting NO !

from what ive seen, as far as set list goes, their shows dont change up enough to see them that many times that close together.
    Peace, Love.

If I didn't have to work here in the town where I live I'd be buying your two extra tickets to Massey Hall in Toronto. I am dying to see them!! :)

    The concerts should be good.

Exactly... this would be the only tour where I would strongly suggest it. You will be getting three different shows because they will be playing stuff at the Cleveland show you won't get on the two nights in Toronto. (Assuming my memory is right in that they are only playing one night in Cleveland)

I saw them once and a long time ago and that was enough for me. ugh
  • Thank you LowLight10 for reading my entire original post. Some of the comments didn't make sense because according to their website they will be playing completely different setlists at the multiple show locations - absolutely NO REPEATS. Even Pearl Jam rarely ever does this. And Cleveland is a one night only stand but SP claims that they plan to play even different stuff at that. Still don't know - I may sell my one Cleveland ticket and see them twice in Toronto.

Also for the posters that said NO - I wonder how much you like SP to begin with. I love alot of their older stuff and Zeitgeist kicks some butt! Don't know why I've never seen them live - probably cause I spend all my money on Pearl Jam and other Seattle bands.

...I swear I never took it for granted. Just thought of it now.
  • Thanks also to The Vacant for posting a link to some of their other shows-good idea.

And itsevobaby - which ones are the Gish shows? And how do you know? I would hope they'd play a little bit of Gish at each show.

  • Here's another thing that adds to the dilemma I'm having - if I see SP in Toronto, I won't be seeing any of Chris Cornell's Canadian shows. I don't care too much for what Chris is putting out now with Timbaland, but I saw him with his new backing band 4 times in the last year and they played some Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog and it was awesome. Plus his new band are not big famous rock stars so they love to hang out after with fans - I got to hang out with every one of them and talk music. So cool!

Plus Chris claims that he plans to sing a couple songs that he hasn't sung for about 20 years - what could those be? Would definitely love to hear those. So I guess the real decision is do I want more of Chris Cornell - again? Or do I want to see Pumpkins for the first time ever (and more than once)?

I'd go for the Cornell show, Pumpkins bitterly disappointed me last time I saw them.

I saw 2 of the Asheville shows last summer that opened the tour, including night one. That show was fucking amazing...over three hours long and a great setlist.

The 2nd show I went to was not nearly as awesome, but I still wasn't sorry I saw two.

    Three might be stretching it...;)
I am lost, I'm no guide. But I'm by your side...

  • I read some of Cornell's current sets include Reach Down, Like Suicide (full band), Wooden Jesus, No Attention, and Searching With My Good Eye Closed. Lots of changes from the other year. Thankfully he doesn't seem to be playing much from Carry On or Scream.

    Why did Pumpkins disappoint you?

It was a festival show, where you would expect them to play their hits and maybe some of the gems from their best albums. Instead they wasted valuable time on a 15 minute version of Heavy Metal Machine and other crap. I had seen them earlier in the year and they played a great set, but Billy Corgan is still capable of being a really pretentious little shit. It's just a bit of a risk to take, you might get some amazing shows, but then you might get a load of obscure shit from Machina. It didn't help that Nine Inch Nails had played right before them, and they played a STUNNING set.

I saw Chris Cornell 3 times last year, and he just got better and better. His voice is on insane form, and he's digging up loads of great Soundgarden and TOTD stuff.

Yeah, NIN completely blew Reading to pieces that night, Corgan didn't have a fucking chance and he still pushed it with crappy jams and not enough highlights from their back catalogue. The only thing that impressed me about them was Chamberlain. It's a shame too, I remember the first time I heard Siamese Dream. I played the shit out of that album.

100% agree. It's not like they aren't capable of pulling off an amazing show. Had they substituted Heavy Metal Machine with Silverfuck or Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans - similarly long songs, they would have gone down a storm.
  • Yeah - Cornell's shows from last year are some of my favorite concerts of my entire life - probably even better than at least half of the Pearl Jam shows I've seen. It also helps when they're mostly GA shows in small venues & Cornell plays a song you request cause you were able to get up to the rail. But Temple of the Dog is my all time favorite album and Chris & Eddie are my two favorite singers so I know I can't go wrong with Chris.

As far as Chris's "split personality" it just shows how talented and versatile he is - something for everyone's taste. And the song "Scream" gets more catchy each time I listen to it - I find myself singing along.

I should change the title of this thread - it's turning into a Cornell vs. Pumpkins thread. lol

  • I saw Smashing Pumpkins tonight in Cleveland but I was unfortunately really really late. I was tired from volunteering for the election campaign and I thought they'd have an opener but they didn't, and then I took a wrong turn driving to Cleveland. And this was after having a fight with my family - so all in all a shitty night. I guess I wasn't in the mood for a concert anyway - but I could never really get into the concert.

Pumpkins played Heavy Metal Machine which I don't care for. Didn't play a lot of older stuff - did play Today (which Billy let the crowd sing the whole 1st verse and the guys behind me were loud and obnoxious and couldn't sing worth crap) and Disarm. Played a new song which I really liked - kind of had an island beat with lots of percussion. At the end they sang I Only Come Out at Night & Everyone is Beautiful and everyone's instrument was a kuzu. 2 or 3 minutes of this would have been funny but this must have gone on about 15 minutes. They totally lost me. While they played these last 2, I was thinking what a waste of money. I had made up my mind to not see them in Toronto. Not including the last 2, they only played 2 hours. Then I put one of their cds in on the way home and just loved it. So why can't they put on a show that sounds like their cds?

But I didn't find any buyers for my Toronto tix. Guess SP fans don't travel the way PJ fans do. Had I held up a sign at a PJ concert saying "PJ Toronto tix 4 sale" I bet I would have had multiple takers.

Where did you see Chris last year?

I saw him in Cleveland & Columbus Ohio & Nashville TN. Then this year I saw him on tour with Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution in Ohio.

I live in the UK, I saw him once at a festival type show, he played just before Aerosmith, then I saw him twice in fairly intimate, theatre sized, venues in London.

it was definitely in april but not sure if it was '06 or '07...

it was my first time and I would definitely go again. I didn't care for the audioslave stuff but it was worth it.

I saw the pumpkins at virgin festival in baltimore a year ago. they sounded great but I'm not a fan.

If the Pumpkins were putting on shows their fans wanted to see this wouldn't be a problem. But they're not.

I must have been right behind you slightly to the left-between Chris and Yogi. I'm the one that threw the Mother Love Bone t-shirt on stage for Chris which he did finally wear and then threw my beloved shirt to someone else in the crowd. I was really pissed at him for awhile for that-I intended for him to keep it but he probably has several and may not want a reminder of his dear friend Andy anyway. Who knows? But the shirt did look much better on him. lol

How did you like when they played Ty Cobb? I loved that- The crowd went wild!

Are you seeing him this month in Ontario?
