Yes, this is my thread. This is my current favorite genre of music. Check out Sun Kil Moons "Ghosts of the Great Highway", its the best of Mark Kozeleks music. Magnolia Electric Co. is great(as mentioned one post above). Bob Schneider, Neko Case, Gillian Welch, Will Oldham, Neil Halstead are some more great artists.

My favorite band on this thread is so far Cenrto-Matic.

  • I know it's not really alt-country, but I just listened to the album that Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits did with Emmylou Harris. It's a little adult-contempo in some places, but in others it's a good ol' slice of americana.

I just got a new record by Okkeril River called "Black Sheep Boy" and it is amazing! Apparently they have a few other LP's that are worth checking out.

Timesbold is a band well worth checking out.

Townes Van Zandt could easily go in this thread and is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

I saw Southern Bitch open for DBT in December 2004 and they rocked.

The Court and Spark is a terrific band out of San Francisco that I once saw open for the also excellent & already mentioned Magnolia Electric Co.

Typically I'd say that early Wilco & Uncle Tupelo is as alt-country as I get, but I love the Ryan Adams twangy stuff.

Willard Grant Conspiracy is another great band that no one seems to remember (their album Mojave is brilliant!). And maybe it's the Texas in me, but I can't help but like a little Robert Earl Keen and Pat Green - especially with an ice cold Shiner Bock. :)
  • the new Drams record reminds me of a mix between early Wilco and early REM.

    it's incredible.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever. Because this is just a ride." And we...kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok? But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

The Drones are quite interesting as well. The Sadies are fucking brilliant. Pair them with Neko Case (as they've done numerous times) and that's a helluva band. I just saw the Drive by Truckers earlier in the summer, and they were great. I'd like to see 'em play a longer show though (they were only an opener).

Just popped on Mike Ness (of Social Distortions) solo album Under The Influences, and that one (along with Cheating at Solitare) could fit under the alt-country tag. Both excellent albums, the cover of Big Iron on Under the Influences is pretty damn good.

Thats an outdated link for Golden Smog, from the Weird Tales days. They just released a new album on Lost Highway, their new page is here:

Nice to see them out on tour again, catch it if you can since it is a quick one, although I don't think Tweedy is touring with them. Saw them back in '98(?) when they last did a big tour, and it was a great show.

Kings of Leon, MMJ and Ryan Adams are so great. I can't get enough of southern rock as of late. Possibly my fav genre of music in the world. There is an Australian band called Mexico City who fit this bill quite nicely.

ive not heard their albums but i LOVED their set at lollapalooza. it was so much fun, they are phenomenal musicians.

funny to see ryan adams mentioned so much. i might have to borrow a few albums from my friend, but his lollapalooza sets was one of the biggest disappointments of the weekend. very boring...

Probably "This Side" would be a good one to start with. "Why Should The Fire Die" is good as well, you really can't go wrong with either one. It's all acoustic, but they are great.

If you want to download a couple songs first, I'd recommend:
    Speak
    This Side
    When In Rome
Jealous of the Moon (my favorite at the moment)

Let me know what you think!
