The Official Alt-Country/Southern Rock Thread
![NakedClown](https://w1.vanillicon.com/1c2d587dc59acec141c3b6c37674f2c4_100.png)
(Preface: I hate the label "alt-country" - but we all know what I mean when I say it).
There seems to be a lot of fans of this "type" of music on this board. We can't go a few days without a new Drive By Truckers thread popping up (are you listening PJ? This means you should tour with them).
So I thought: one thread that we can all use as a resource to share our love for this brand of music, recommend bands, etc. would be a good idea.
So I'll start - here is a list of bands/musicians in this "genre" that I absolutely love and/or have been discussed repeatedly on this board. Add on/comment as you see fit:
Drive-By-Truckers
My Morning Jacket
Slobberbone
Centro-matic
Kathleen Edwards
Vic Chesnutt
The Drams
American Minor
Two Cow Garage
What else - add on...

That's a great list...I need to start chipping away on that.
For anyone that's interested in DBT, most of their live shows end up on http://www.archive.org - the show from Washington DC, 7/15/06 was great. There's also a stream on http://www.npr.org of the same show with a little better sound quality, but it's not downloadable.
Great genre of music...solid lyrics about real stuff, good riffs and big leads.
That's music to me.
big thumbs up

From a show in KY in 05, but gave me goosebumps in Albany and DC.

The Black Crowes I guess some people would put in that category.
"Sorry is the fool who trades his love for high-rise rent, Seems the more you make equals the loneliness you get"

Ryan Adams and the cardinals
the jayhawks
golden smog
I tell him how much I used to love watch him smile
See I haven't seen him smile in a little while
Haven't seen him smile in a little while
But, I know you're laughing from the inside out."
Blind Melon - Mouthfull of cavities
R.I.P. JEN
Uncle Tupelo
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Old '97s
Whiskeytown

Indeed he has. One of my favorites.
m. ward loosely fits in here.
Marah- band from Chicago
The Gourds
And I'll second whoever mentioned Neko Case.
WAR + MAGIC BEANS = PEACE
Gonna be great...will stay for Randolph and the Crowes, but hoping it's empty enough for me to sneak down to front row for DBT.
Hopefully I'll catch the band around at some point and say thanks for the DC show too.
I've always read that Ryan Adams was an arrogant fuck of a pompous ass... AND (point being), that has always turned me off from checking out his music...
But if it's THAT good... I'll give hime a try...
You're correct, he kind of is. I just can't help it though. I really love most of his music, and the stuff he did with Whiskeytown is great.
JENNY SAYS...
God - I remember that song from - what? Junior year of High School.... wow.
Definitely do so. He is on tour right now. If he comes anywhere near you, go see him. Best 25 bucks i spent all summer. He seems to be doing alot better mentaly this year. His live performances are right up there with pearl jam although very diffrent.
I was in ATL in 98 for PJ, and saw a band called "Truckadelic"....one of the best bands I have ever seen.....did some fun covers...I think they have since broken-up.
And I would probably fit Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins on here too. Rabbit Fur Coat may not be quite as 'alt' as some of the other bands on here, but is definately in this vein.

Picked up the Drams record last night. On first listen it seemed a little too smooth, but I'm really digging the harmonies the second time through. Looking forward to seeing them in September.
