I haven't seen this band talked about much on here. In my opinion these two albums are some of the best work Live has done. I'd rank them in my 90's top 10. They are both great albums start to finish. I'd have to say I enjoy listening to Mental Jewelry more probably just because the songs have received less radio play. Some of my favorites are:
The Dam at Otter Creek
Water Song
Selling The Drama
Stage
Pain Lies On The Riverside
Take Me Anthem
Good Pain
Iris
Bridge - 10/25/03
Mansfield I - 6/28/08
Eddie NYC - 8/4/08
Seattle - 9/21/09, 9/22/09
Salt Lake City 9/28/09
LA 9/30/09, 10/07/09
San Diego 10/9/09
Alpine Valley 9/03/11, 9/04/11
Ashbury Park 9/18/21
LA 5/06/21, 5/07/21
Phoenix 05/09/22
NYC 9/11/22
Denver 9/22/22

I'm not really a fan of Mental Jewelry, but Throwing Copper is one of my favourite albums ever - I love the song Iris.

Those albums are great, but I prefer Secret Samahdi to both.

Its quite darker I guess you could say...little rough and might take you a few listens. But I consider it their crowning moment. Its the one album of theirs I still play a lot

They catch a lot of shit on this board. I love Live. IMHO, "V" is good, too.

That one is decent. I remember the first two tracks being really good but then it lost my interest. Someone mentioned "V", and it has its moments but again boring for me overall. I remember buying "Birds of Pray" and listening to it once and shelving it. I think they've done one other one since then and I didn't even bother with that.

I'm telling ya...Secret Samadhi :) I think once you get into it it'll become your favorite Live record

Lakini's Juice alone is worth the money. It's a fucking great album.

Ah, Live. This was my favorite band in early high school until PJ slowly emerged. Secret Samhadi is their best album, though is ultimately forgotten in the way many post-defining albums are. Pretty dark and rockin' and like someone said it may take awhile to hit you (like many great albums). The Distance to Here is solid (anyone else really love the song Meltdown?) but then came the demise. V was...interesting, and good in parts but as a whole didn't do it for me. Then they just started to get less musically creative/more pussy AC radio shit. Now their newer stuff is somewhat embarrassing and at times cringe-worthy It's all very upsetting. I blame Ed K's ego.

  • Live is great. Ed has a great voice. He's a great songwrite. I enjoy all there albums.

Still one of my favorite bands - I agree that Mental Jewelry/TC/Secret Samadhi stand toe-to-toe with any and all other early- to mid-90s albums.

The Distance to Here is a very, very solid album...

V, to me, is their low point.

Birds of Pray has some great songs "Like I do" "River Town" "Lighthouse"... the rest is largely forgettable...

Their most recent album, Songs From Black Mountain, again has some strong tracks "Sofia" and "Night of Nights" which is one of LIVE's best tracks...

The rest of that album is kind of "eh..."

I still hold out hope that they can return to form and put out a great album that reminds us of how good they are...

I haven't heard a thing off of it. I was so disappointed in "Birds of Pray" that I didn't even give it a chance.

For someone who loves Mental Jewelry-Secret Samadhi, but is only lukewarm to "Distance To Here", do you think this one is worth getting?

This thread has renewed my interest in Live. Haven't listened to them for a long time but I've got "Throwing Copper" playing right now

I was reading Live's bio and apparently they did an album before "Mental Jewelry." The band was then known as Public Affection. Here's the review of that album:

I wouldn't get the whole album... but you could download those tracks and be happy...

Public Affection's 'Death of a Dictionary' is actually not bad, not bad at all. It's got that mid-late 80's feel to it which gives it some charm.

Has it been released on cd?

the last couple of albums have been so terrible they really put me off listening to live all together, but i should go back & listen to those earlier albums because there's some classic stuff spread out over all of them.

Yes! Two of my favorite rock albums from the 90's. Secret Samahdi was good. After that, not so much. I've seen them play live 3x though and were great every time.
  • Death of a Dictionary was only released on casette and is pretty rare to find, but there are boots of it on the web. I've got a burnt cd of it somewhere, if I can find it I'll share if people are interested.

Live also has some really solid b-sides. 'Vine Street' rocks.

  • SS was the first album that i ever blew me away. it will always be something special to me, oh the freakin memories with that one.

but then i found pj and i had a new favorite band! tdth wasnt bad but after that, i lost interest and fast.

but their first 3 (and even doad) where great, great albums. i also have had a hard time listening to them lately cause of their recent stuff. i havent even listened to SS in so long.
  • My parents were big Live fans. I remember hearing Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi alot. those were their best 2 albums. IMO I thought V was complete garbage. Distance to here and birds of prey just take some getting used to. thyre good albums.

  • I loved Live in high school, loved Throwing Copper and saw them when they toured in the summer of '95 (with PJ Harvey and Veruca Salt!). After that, I saw them two more times on 2 separate tours and bought Secret Samadhi, The Distance to Here, and V.

These days, my appreciation for them has waned. I still have Throwing Copper (and I still like it, for the most part), but I've gotten rid of the other albums (I did burn the tracks I liked onto a CD). Listening to Secret Samadhi again, I hate some of the lyrics: "Angel, don't you have some bagels in my oven?" "Everybody's here, this puke stinks like beer".

I don't know anything about their other music so I don't know if they have any better material but listening to Throwing Copper was one of the more unpleasant musical experiences I've had. I really don't see what sets it apart from other mid-to-late 90s post-grunge rock music like Creed.
