This is one of those bands where this could be nearly impossible, because when you think of one incredible, favorite song, you think of five, but I thought it'd be interesting to try...I tried to do it in order as best I can, but I'd love to see what everyone else comes up with. This took me quite a while . . .

1. Leave
2. Cuyahoga
3. Sweetness Follows
4. Pretty Persuasion
5. Man on the Moon
6. Undertow
7. Me In Honey
8. Catapult
9. Harborcoat
10. Hope

How about everyone here

See what I mean? This is the problem with trying to pick 10 songs. But that's what makes it fun I guess.

Can't believe it took 4 posts for someone to say Nightswimming

I can't be bothered to list 10 right now but that would be #1 :)
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

That one almost made it on my list - would probably be in my Top 15.

Has anyone heard of this website: popsongs.wordpress.com ? He's going through the entire R.E.M. catalogue, song by song, posting his thoughts on it and then opening up a discussion board. It's a pretty good read for those with some time on their hands.
  • There are 10 good REM songs? Wow, news to me.

Also, if they manage to make "Horse to Water" on the upcoming Accelerate CD half as good as it was during the Dublin rehearsals from last year, then that may be scraping my top 10.
  • Here are my picks, in NO particular order because that's just asking too much :)

Certainly, The Lifting and I've Been High are two very great songs from their later work. I really love the versions of the two songs that they did on MTV Unplugged.

I don't think I have ever heard this or thought it. I have heard Stipe mention Bowie in listing songs he likes a lot in interviews, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if this were true.

R.E.M. are mostly influenced by Patti Smith, the Velvet Underground, and the Birds. Also a lot of other stuff too like T. Rex, Aerosmith, the Kinks.

    Oh and my fav songs,
    E bow the letter
    Wolves, Lower
    Sitting Still
    9-9
    Drive
    So. Central Rain
    Monty got a raw deal
    Walk Unafraid

I don't know if it's the same site, but some guy did the same thing with Pearl Jam. He rated and critiqued EVERY PJ song.

    Nice.

OK, here is my best shot....

    Electrolite
    Leave
    All the Way to Reno
    Driver 8
    Fall on Me
    Perfect Circle
    Man on the Moon
    Pretty Persuasion
    Begin the Begin
    Bang and Blame

---I didn't number them because after the first two, it is a craps shoot

I am thrilled to see all this R.E.M. action on the board. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for the one post I really need, the "R.E.M. announces on sale dates for North America" thread. I have seen every one of my favorite bands, most many times, but I still haven't seen R.E.M. It wasn't looking good for 2008, but I think I can hit Toronto.

I am starting to think the 2008 North American tour is a farce.

Someone actually offered me free R.E.M. tickets back in 1988, I think, but I turned them down because the only song I knew at the time was "Stand" which I didn't like at all.

    For my top 10:

    Nightswimming
    Find The River
    Imitation Of Life
    Binky The Doormat
    E-bow The Letter
    Country Feedback
    Tongue
    You're In The Air
    At My Most Beautiful
    Strange Currencies

  • As it is with PJ, picking 10 R.E.M. songs is almost impossible. At this moment, though, I'd go with:

    Begin The Begin
    Fall On Me
    You Are The Everything
    Low
    Strange Currencies
    I Took Your Name
    Let Me In
    Bittersweet Me
    So Fast, So Numb
    Imitation Of Life
"Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"
  • Wow. Possibly the hardest Top 10 Ever.
REM may be the handsdown best at song craftsmanship, and picking just 10 from the top is almost damned impossible.

    1. Country Feedback
    2. World Leader Pretend
    3. Harborcoat
    4. Flowers of Guatemala
    5. Half A World Away
    6. You Are The Everything
    7. Seven Chinese Brothers
    8. Ages Of You (Dead Letter version, haha yep)
    9. Sad Professor
    10. Disturbance At The Heron House

Honorable Mentions: Sitting Still, Me In Honey, Catapult, Belong, The Wrong Child, Nightswimming, Find The River & Sweetness Follows, Why Not Smile, New Test Leper, Let Me In, Time After Time (annElise), Driver 8, the entire album Lifes Rich Pageant.

    The Entire Remaining REM Catalogue.

    :D
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?
