    the actual music...not bad, but nothing special

    at least they were playing live with real instruments

    Well it's small considering the amount I had to choose from :o:p

    I could've had a list twice as long just for 2pac highlights to be honest, no matter how much hip-hop I hear I always seem to be in that minority of "real" hip-hop fans who just love his music beyond anything else.

    Hmm, depends how you classify a 'real' hip hop fan....


    2Pac is one on his own for sure, but I just can't call him my favourite.....I guess it's all just taste really.....

    There just seems to be a certain amount of snobbery amongst certain hip-hop fans who listen to more than just the obvious mainstream stuff about 2pac, people say he had poor flow, was just a money-grabbing poser who was too wrapped up in his "thug" persona but they completely miss the point. The kinds of hip-hop fans who mainly listen to "backpacker" rap like the stuff on Def Jux, Aesop Rock and Cannibal Ox etc and then listen to some token "gangsta" stuff like NWA and the Wu to seem like they aren't just nerds :p I love all good hip-hop so that attitude is completely bizarre to me. First of all, Tupac is the only rapper I've ever heard who never rhymed words for the sake of it, EVERY line meant something, he was a lyricist who rapped, not a rapper who wrote lyrics, and his flow was totally solid, people just like to hate on music that becomes too popular. Secondly his contradictions are what fascinates me and has continued to fascinate me since I first heard him 10 years ago. I can't think of any other MUSICIAN, never mind rapper, who has sustained my interest for so long. Something about his voice, his words, his personality just tapped into my consciousness one day and never left.

    That I very much agree with.....forgetting genre, he is a true original full stop....

    And I understand how it feels to get caught up in an artists personality too, when everything in their life becomes fascinating.....completely different music but that's the effect Morrissey has on me (I'm in no way comparing to two musically).....yet he too is someone who polarises opinions.....


    As for Hip hop snobbery, I have no time for it....With all music I just like what I like.....

    Ha yeah, I'm a Morrissey fan too, particularly the Smiths, and I'm not even fussed about the supposedly shitty aspects of his personality, I think he's ok. Same goes for Tupac. He was a hypocrite but he knew it and he addressed it, he was just a human and as flawed and paradoxical as any other, he was just too honest to only portray one side of it. To use a lame expression, I can't think of any other rapper who "kept it real" like him.

    I have no problem reconciling these two sides of a person, because it's ridiculous for a person to try to show themselves as one-sided through their art anyway:

    Sorry, I just can't get my head around this.
    Perhaps its the beats, the voices, the attitude - it just sounds like a load of drone to me. The links that I tried, I had to turn off immediately as I found the music unlistenable.
    I can't see the appeal.

    I mean, none of the implications of the word address any aspects of any rap music I've ever heard, apart from maybe Dalek.

    Also "attitude" :confused: You act as if there is a thematic thread running through all the songs here which is just not true, a massive range of hip-hop styles has been covered in just a few posts.

    My point is, say you don't like it, that's fine, it's just wrong to call it unlistenable or "drone", this may be your understanding of it but it's your shortcoming, not the music's :)

    To be fair thats one of their weaker songs, and not a great performance for them to boot.

    try this, although I've yet to see them, the performances I've seen by them on tv were absolutely incredible, and their albums are excellent as well, just keep an open mind

    For a giggle I've always loved The Pharcyde's 'Ya Mama!'. In fact the whole 'Bizarre Ride II...The Pharcyde' album is amazing.

    But pretty much anything by Stetsasonic, Ultramagnetic MCs, Slick Rick, A Tribe Called Quest is fine by me.
    Plus anything off Nas' 'Illmatic'.

    Very under-rated is LL Cool J's debut. Very clever considering how new hip-hop was at he time and the fact he was something like 16 when he made it!

    anything Tupac or Tribe Called Quest and I loved early Outkast (southernplayalistic...) and I used to bump Too Short back in highschool (and from time to time when I feel like being really vulgar).

    I also really dug DJ Quik (great beats and flow) and his crew 2nd II None, Hi-C, etc.

    Aside from the horrid "music" in rap, I can't stand to listen to anything in which the performer feels it necessary to remind the listener in basically every song who they are listening to...I can almost hear eddie now...
