HOUSTON AREA - Let us know how you fared

I know power is out for most of the area but if any of you have WI-FI up - let us know how you're doing. Looks like downtown Houston got pummeled by high winds and some flooding. I watched most of the night and hope everybody is okay - especially in Galveston where things are really bad.
Please be safe......

Talked to my family that stayed, my cousin said they are all OK, just that it's trashed, flooded, trees down everywhere, fences down, lots of power out. I'm from Houston, so we've been through our share of these. I remember when Alicia hit in the 80's, people were paying us $5.00 a car to push their car or truck from the street to higher ground, mostly peoples front yards.

Glad to hear they're safe. I'm from Miami originally and know what you're family is going through. No matter how much you prepare, it's a monumental pain. From what I saw on the news, downtown looks really bad. I don't think folks who work there will be going in for a while. Broken glass everywhere.

Particularly scary when they come in at night AND if you're by yourself like I was in Ft. Myers in '04 when Charley came thru. Luckily I had my big ol Yellow Lab to keep me company! :)

Visited. Never lived there. I'm about the snow and outdoors so Houston really wasn't for me. Lots of nice people there though.

Yes, and it'll take many years for it to recover. I'm concerned about the folks who decided to stay there and ride it out. Guess we'll know tonight or tomorrow after they've had a chance to get in there and check things out.

I'm guessing you won't have to go to work for a few days so may as well take your time getting into the fray. Hope everything at your place made it through okay.

Our local news just had extensive reports on the aftermath of the storm. All the coastal cities really got hit BADLY. Extensive flooding and damage. The city of Houston still has no power - may not have any for as much as 4 to 6 weeks - according to local news. Employers are saying don't report for work until advised.

Wow - I'm so sorry you guys are in the middle of such a stressful and depressing situation. Our thoughts and our hearts are with you.

I lucked out. Windows still intact. Neighbors hit hard. Tons of trees in houses...90% power still out. Very limited food and gas. Found one Taco Bell open...line down the street. Drove down checked out and booked back up north for some ac. No work at least till Wed. Work downtown and its a mess.

hmmm hey PJ how bout benefit concert. :)

The other Houston PJ fan checking in... We decided to stay and ride it out but we were far enough away from the coast that it was ok. The storm was loud as HELL! The worst part is that it lasted so long. It seemed like it was never going to end. There was limited damage to our house but that's about it. Our garage door is pretty torn up but I think that's it. We don't have electricity or water but but not complaining. There are a lot of people a lot worse off than us. I hope the others that haven't checked in are ok.

Because he's a jerk who like to stereotype, just like lots of people on this board, you know, there are only 2 fans in Houston, even though they played 2 shows in 2000. Meanwhile people in Houston don't have power and it sucks, but hey it's okay because he made a funny.......

  • Ok here too. We got power back yesterday, and I couldn't believe it. Apparently downtown is pretty bad, and I am not sure when we'll be going back in. Good thing that I have plenty of beer, pop tarts, and PJ. Spinning Benaroya #427 right now...
Hope you are all doing well out there.

It hasn't been that bad. They already have people set up in hotels that need houseing and they have stations set up around the city handing out supplies. From what I heard, they had ppl set up in hotels on Saturday night and started handing out some supplies yesterday and all the stations were up and running today. The complaint was that the FEMA supplies were delayed 3 or 4 hours so now people have been saying they're working slow. Overall, considering the volume of people they are dealing with, I think they've done a pretty good job.

IF you can believe the national media, it looks like folks are getting what they need. Being here in Texas, I've heard nothing but positive info on the gearing up by the National Guard that took place way ahead of the storm's landfall. Numbers of/kinds of relief (ie. ice, water, food) was quoted and it was monumental.

The Governor has been on TV non-stop everywhere- talking to victims etc, and you gotta figure that Bush is going to pull out the stops in getting aid to HIS state - especially in light of the Katrina fiasco.

I also heard that some Texas Guard folks and Austin Power were headed to the Louisiana border. Which is good. Texas has a lot more resources than LA does and I'm sure they can use our help. I'm sure Dallas is sending lots of help because from local coverage, there's a lot happening right here in Austin to help people/animals out. But that's the kind of city Austin is. To be honest, that's the kind of state Texas is, and I've come to that conclusion after living here only a year. :)
