Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

I would like Iron & Wine if it wasn't for his voice. It's too pretty.
Maybe I'm crazy, but for the most part I like my male country/folk singer to have a rough voice. There are exceptions, but I'm always on the lookout for a band with just the right vocals.
I love Jay Farrar circa the Straightaways album. His singing on that record is so bad it's good. The sound of his voice does something to me . . .
This might be a good moment to point out that I'm not a guy.
The Drams are worth checking out too. They rose from the ashes of Slobberbone, and are another band that is good friends with the DBT. The album Jubilee Dive had some excellent tracks on it.
I do plan on picking up this album one of these days.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
The original so called "Alt Country" band is the best: Uncle Tupelo. The band that spawned Wilco and Son Volt. How badass is that.
Amen.
Is anyone familiar with Jolie Holland? I ordered one of her albums last night. Apparently there's a jazz influence going along with the folk thing. I'm looking forward to listening to her.

And I'm not living this life without you, I'm selfish and clear
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without
My best... friend. Wake up, to see you could have it all
It's M. Ward, with Zooey Deschanel on vocals. And it's far better than you think.:)
Strangely enough I think the country-tinged songs this album are my least favorite tracks. Still a nice little record overall though. I recommend it as well.

Junior Brown plays some wicked licks on the guitar....almost a mix of surf and country style.

About 10 years ago I bought Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball album, and followed up some of the artists whose songs she had covered. Recommend this album in particular (any album with Uncle Neil doing some of the backing vocals can't be too bad) but I also ended up a big fan from this of Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch as well as some of Steve Earle's music.
These days could do worse than the Steeldrivers.

Woody Guthrie. Nobody but nobody , save maybe Hank Williams or Johnny Cash, wove a tale the way he did. Masterpieces . I absolutely love the 1940 interviews and performances recorded when Alan Lomax was interviewing him and he was playing his music...songs like Green Back Dollar, Jesus Christ and Jessie James, Dust Bowl Blues, etc.. An incredible chronicler of his times. To think he could be so great , despite the fact that he lived but 55 years, and was so ill with Huntingtons disease later in his life.

You guys really need to give North Twin a listen. I saw them at the Showbox last year when I was in Seattle for work. They opened for Son Volt. I loved them. They have one album out and it's great! Apparently Mike likes them too....
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

I'm really loving The Flying Burrito Brothers right now. I need to get Gram's solo albums and Sweetheart of the Rodeo. And The International Submarine Band, too!
Another group I want to check out is The Everybodyfields. I can't remember if anyone suggested them yet??
about the last one, I tried to translated the lyrics. Of course, I did my best, but I'm sure it's not enough:
You and me - victims of prematurely
cut umbilical cord
being twenty several years old
we wet sheets
You and me - we hide our hands
deep in the pockets
being ashamed from the world
of the thumbs sucked to the bones
And we though we have two legs, hands too
People don't say to us: good morning!
You and me-become dependent on
warm voices psycholigists
we feel really safe
in sheltered surgeries
and when we have problems with falling asleep
in spite of tiredness we swallow
so quickly artificial sleep
in blue glaze
And we though we have two legs, hands too
People don't say to us: good morning!

Yes, that's a really nice album. I woudn't consider it alt-country, but I'ts well worth a listen.
