The Tragically Hip, I know they have a massive 54 page plus thread started, but I wanted to get an idea of who their influences are. What does their music sound like?

They seem to have a very loyal following judging by the aforementioned thread.

i started listening to sleater kinney and tragically hip after reading about them on here, and while i love sleater kinney, particularly the dig me out album, i just cant see anything in tragically hip. Certainly not a canadian pearl jam anyway in my opinion, for whoever said that. Ive found most of their songs rather boring and uninteresting to be honest.
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.

They are the Canadian Pearl Jam.

Actucally, Pearl Jam are the Tragically Hip of America. (the Hip have been around longer). All kidding aside, I don't think the two bands sound very much alike, other than the fact that they're both alternative rock bands made up of drums, bass, two guitars, and a singer.

What to the Hip sound like? They've been called many things over the years. Alt-rock, hard-rock, art-rock, etc... After so many years, all these labels have kind of bled into one another. The Hip can play anything: rock, hard-rock, roots/folk, punk-rock, blues, piano ballads. They can pretty much do it all. The heart of this band lies in Gord Downie's incredible lyrics. The dude can write. In Canada he's right up there with Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell as one of the greatest lyricist/poets this country has ever produced, and he's arguably the best frontman in rock. There's really nobody out there like him. He's a true rock n' roll original. His weird spasmodic dancing and cryptic mid-song rants are always worth the price of admission. During instrumental breaks in songs you'll hear him tell stories, improvise new lyrics on the spot, rant about current events, or have heated arguments and fights with his microphone stand. (the mic stand usually ends up losing). And of course he's backed by five excellent musicans who can rock out like nobody's business.

As a starting point, I'd suggest picking up their 2-disc greatest hits collection "Yer Favourites". That'll give you the best indication of what they sound like. Either that or just download a few songs. Their new album "World Container" is the best thing they've done in years.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Starting with their greatest hits package, Yer Favourites it definitely a good place for a casual fan or someone who wants to get a good feel of what the Hip are like. As for actual albums check out Phantom Power (my personal fave), Fully Completely, and Road Apples. They have other great albums but IMO these are some of their finest and most solid.

Listen to Fully Completely, Day for Night, and Trouble at the Henhouse. 3 of the best rock albums of the 90's.
  • Are they any non-Canadians out there who actually like the Hip? Are there any other Canadians who dislike them? I'm not a fan myself. I will give Gord Downie some credit for being charismatic, but in my opinion, he is not in the same league as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen as someone else stated. To me they are the classic example of being a big fish in a small pond.

The Hip have by no means reinvented the wheel or anything, but they are a very, very solid rock band. That guy who called them boring probably lacks a pulse. Personally, I really like Rob Baker's guitar work ... Classic bluesy rock sound, Stones influenced ... But he's not a one-trick pony either, quite versatile. I also think that Jimmy Fay is a very underated rock drummer. Gord may not be Leonard Cohen, but he stands head and shoulders above people like Chad Kroger. Canada is a bit of a small pond, music-wise, but the Hip deserve their legendary status, IMHO.

    a sacrilege! :D

just kidding...we all have different tastes.

they seem to have a loyal and devoted fanbase in the states...just not massive numbers.

"locked" is a big fan here :)
  • They sound like Canada.

I think that there are many south of the border who appreciate The Hip, but it is a small following. They're one of those bands that is a national phenomenom, but have very little international success. I know there are several bands of the like in the U.K. and the U.S. has Bruce Springsteen.

The Hip are Canadian. Their lyrics and sound is very much Canadian and it doesn't necessarily translate to other countries. It's difficult to truly appreciate their lyrics unless you're Canadian. There are so many Canadian nuances. As well, the sound of The Hip truly encaptures summers in Canada. The lake, BBQ, beer, and The Hip = Canadian summer.

  • the hip are just great and truly amazing live...gordie is something else on stage and his rambles are brilliant...i actually lost count on how many times i have seen them live...i went to barrie, toronto, syracuse, rochester, cleveland, atlanta 3 times, erie pa and rome, ny(woodstock 99) just to see them...plus 6 times while in lived in buffalo...that's my story and i'm sticking to it

LOL, I was just gonna say the same thing. I was at Sasquatch as well, and the girl beside me from Seattle had never heard of them before. Needless to say, she was thoroughly blown away. After their set she asked me to list off a bunch of Hip records she should own, and she wrote them all down. That Sasquatch show was hands down the best set I've ever seen them play. There was just so much passion, energy, and ferocity in that performance. It was incredible. Gord's crazy rant about the hail storm was one for the ages (check out my signature)
