death cab- their set was 100 times better than when i saw them open for pj. i had a blast and they really rocked out. so much heavier live than they were on album.
my morning jacket- i really need to see them in their own show. cos an hour just isnt enough. they were amazing and his voice is unparalleled.
flaming lips- wasnt too familiar going in, but my god did they deliver. SO much fun live.
stars- dont know who else caught this canadian group but they were excellent. i was skeptical but my friend was raving and she was spot on.
nickel creek- great little folksy set, including the most unexpected cover of the entire lolla festival: toxic, by britney spears.
wilco- with 4 new songs, all of which sounded great. i kinda would have liked them to rock out a bit more, but they played well nonetheless.
blues traveler- another great live act. we were upset that our one friend wanted to leave haflway through. i was dancing like a maniac.
disappointements:
ryan adams- didnt know him all that well before, and i wont after. he sucked. boring slow blues jams and self indulgent drivel in between.
built to spill- i had high expectations, but they just did not seem very comfortable in front of a crowd that size and the sound was off. i look forward to seeing them in a smaller venue in chicago in a month.
I'm just curious- how much of a chance did you give them?
Particle's set was one of the many highlights of Lolla for me. They even covered Radiohead's National Anthem.
I agree that the Theivery Corporation's set was amazing. I had to convince my three travel partners not to leave after the Lips to go over to the other side and afterward all three of them told me they were very happy they stayed. I too danced like a mofo- how could you not?
And Ween was fantastic. I think I said this in another thread somewhere, but Captain bored the shit out of the people around me, it seemed, but I was into it big time. And hearing Piss Up a Rope was awesome.
Particle I caught most of the set and you are right they were fantastic, that was my first time seeing them too.
My Morning Jacket I think that was my 7th time seeing them this year and I think this one was the best one yet for my tastes.
Dont get me wrong Manu Chao was pretty good, I read the background etc and enjoyed it but how do you put him on ahead of The Flaming Lips? Doesnt make sense unless they wanted to maximize the crowd for Kanye West.
The walk from one side of the park to the other I timed myself at 7 minutes fast walking, once you figured out best paths etc, through the hedges, behind the food trailer, etc. it wasnt that bad.
Btw there was one major logistical screw up they ran out of most of the t shirts by the 3rd day! And official t-shirts only 20 bucks, and all band shirts 20 bucks too! Nice poster too, I got one. Other good deals was the 2 bucks for official program, free TimeOut Chicago at Virgin music tent
Ok I'm finally back. It was fucking awesome. I have tons of pictures. I'll write a big review tomorrow...but for now I'll just go ahead and say that the best bands were The Flaming Lips, Queens, Kayne West, the Dresden Dolls, the Raconteurs, and S-K.
Also.....anyone know what live songs from the show will be available on itunes and from what artists.

Actually only gave Particle about 15 mins...did not hear the Radiohead cover and would have loved that. I guess calling them "ok" was a bit of a dis and that was not the intention. I have seen them before and also caught them with one of the Mickey Hart sets (Hydra) last year?
When it comes to those kinds of bands, I only really care for three; STS9, Lotus and Signal Path.

Good point. Lips are a much better nighttime thing. I think there may have been some schedule strategizing for this festival. There always seemed to be only one "buzz" band playing at a time for the most part.

I missed the Hydra show when it was in town last year. I'm kicking myself for that. With Particle's recent lineup changes I'm curious to see what happens next, but if Lolla was an indication, they'll still be an enjoyable listen.
Haven't heard Lotus, but I do like STS9 a lot and heard Signal Path at Bonnaroo a couple years ago and have meant to check them out.
Hmmm, I was there....but not for a very long time....had friends with me that wanted to go elsewhere but MADE them come with me to at least pop in on my PJ buds
I had on a striped dress...do you remember me, cuz I was kinda drunk!
Yeah I think so....you were the cutie in the striped dress! ;-)
I was the old guy with the black 1992 Lollapalooza swirl t-shirt that looked like he'd had a couple Makers Marks by then....

My buddy found one of those mini-bottles of Maker's Mark on the ground... WAS IT YOURS?!
Ben Kweller- in my notes he has an x through his name, meaning I didnt dig him. I rushed over to see Nickel Creek and that was a fun show, country stuff.
I did see some dude in a 1992 Lollapalooza shirt, where the names of the bands form a spiral (back of shirt). Made me wish I wore my Lollapalooza 94 shirt...

That may be a different shirt, my 92 has the word Lollapalooza swirled on the front in purple, yellow and white and the bands listed normally on the back. I didn't wear it until Sat night so I could look good and be clean for all the PJ hotties at Smokedaddy! ;-)
I did wear my red Lolla 94 shirt on Friday. The one with the two-headed green monster on the front.

Wait, did we talk about how you gave your wristband to someone else??? Its all a bit of a blur to me....such an insane weekend!

Yes you are correct.....my buddy and I gave our wristbands to some PJ homiez to use for Sunday since we weren't staying for that.
Hopefully they got in with em.
