I like Cash's version more, but I agree with everyone who says it's because of the context. For me, the video adds a lot to it. Especially when June is looking over Johnny's shoulder and her facial expression...it just gets to me.

it is a really moving video. seeing june looking over his shoulder like that, the pieces of his past put together in the footage near the end and in time with the notes, and the closing of the piano to end the video. that scene you mentioned was actually shot in the sitting room of their home.
look I really like Johnny Cash and I think he did a great job on Hurt, but fucking whatever come on guys? like when rolling stone reviewed a NIN show and said that Hurt is a Johnny Cash song now I was like fuck off. not becasue he did a bad job and I think he added a whole new context to the song etc etc etc but the original version is so pained and so beautifull it'd be like someone covering Black and people saying ohh that's so much better teh PJ's version.
you are absolutely fucking right. that song is all about Trent.

I agree that the video adds much context and makes teh song infinitly better, the first time I saw it was also the first time I heard the song but from a purely musical standpoint NIN has to have it

I haven't bee on in a long time..but this thread caught my eye today... I must add my two cents.
I'm a huge Nails fans. Hurt is the song that lured me into loving this group so much. The passsion that Trent throws behind this song is simply uncomparable. This is such a beautiful song and no one could ever sing it as well as Trent can because he wrote it...it's as simple as that. To think that someone might actually think that someone else wrote this song is a little offensive. I'm not knocking Cash by any means...he's a great singer..but when it comes to this song...he'll never be able to match Trent....ever.

saying that a song can't be performed better than the author is absurd. think about bob dylan's songs.

Like "All Along The Watchtower"? Anyway, Johnny Cash's version of the song is done extremely well and it's very hard to cover, the song being so personal. But it doesn't compare to Trent Reznor's original. I think the cover came along at the perfect time in Johnny Cash's life and that lends some sentimentality to it. He made it his "own" in the sense that he took a song that Trent Reznor wrote about a friend with a heroin habit and made it fit in the context of his own life, but he didn't make it a song that will be remembered as a Johnny Cash song, rather than a Nine Inch Nails song. I compare it to Joe Strummer's cover of "Redemption Song". It's done incredibly well, but it could never be as good as Bob Marley's original. I read a review of Strummer's cover that said "It speaks volumes to the quality of the cover version, that Strummer could attempt it and come out without shit on his shoes". I think that applies here to Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". I'll take Johnny Cash over Nine Inch Nails any day, but I've got to give it to Trent Reznor on this one.

if I remember correctly..I didn't generalized this statement..you did..if you go back and read what I wrote I speak of that specific song...so your reply doesn't have anything to do with what I said.
