I've heard a lot of good stuff from dischord in the 00's era, when hardcore punk stopped being all about aggression, but some of the more toned down emo bands I enjoy are SDRE and The Promise Ring (even though they get loads of hate)printf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");0 -

Well, I'm only 20 so I kind of fit between that crowd of 'grungers' and the new 'emo-ists'. I've been trying to go back to the roots and find music I missed out on but I still like a wealth of music out now that isn't emo. If you like passionate vocals with a great guitarist I recommend Shinedown and their second album in particular. Their song Lady So Devine is 7+ minutes long and has hints of any Led Zep song what with the string of solos Jasin pulls off. Brent also has the best vocals around now IMO next to only Eddie Vedder. If you like bands that have a darker type feel there's a few that fit that bill. In particular Seether and Mercy Fall have great vocalists and the latter has a good guitarist too. Oh, and I can't forget a new band called Rose Hill Drive that has a definite classic rock vibe. I also will add in The Exit who aren't well known but have a rather unique style compared to anything I've heard.

I turn 30 this August and have given up on mainstream music since about '99 or so. Any new stuff that I listen to is "indie" or other lesser known bands. The thing is though, unlike the commercial crap today, "grunge" was based on heavy blues and great arena rock. There are plenty of forefathers, if you will, that are begging to be heard.
I've found myself worrying much less about being seen as "cool" by the kids, and much more concerned with getting into the old blues legends, jazz artists, and OLD country. There is so much there to hear and enjoy and I feel that it really helps my knowledge base concerning music. If a little 20 year old wants to talk shit about the music I listen to, I'll quickly turn the conversation to the origins of rock n' roll and how his bands are pure embarrassments to music in general. Knowledge trumps any trend."Worse than traitors in arms are the men who pretend loyalty to the flag, feast and fatten on the misfortunes of the nation while patriotic blood is crimsoning the plains." -- Abraham Lincoln0 -
you know, you need to look for new music to listen to. it's not going to drop from the sky.
try the greenhornes. the white stripes. the drones. brendan benson. ryan adams. minus the bear.
as 7 kettles said, there's so much good stuff out there.
i can't imagine how you've missed it.hear my name
take a good look

I might get flamed but I'm 26 and the last new band I got into was Linkin Park and that was back in 2000. Last year sucked except for the new NIN, but this year is looking up with already new PJ,rhcp,& tool with new Deftones on the way soon (I hope). I find myself picking up old stuff I used to have on tape or that got stolen years ago. Right now contemplating ordering some Megadeth,Pantera,Danzig,Soundgarden,Faith no more,Tom Petty, and Hendrix but damn it gets expensive! I know old "Heavy Metal" thrown in with some early 90's alt and classic rock but I listen to everything from classic rock, metal, alt, rap, techno. Nothing new intrests me.Seems the more you make
equals the loneliness you get0 -

When I go bowling at our local lanes (hey there's nothing better to do, and you can drink and get blazed while throwing heavy objects!) I see "kids" and they are at times making fun of stuff I grew up on ...
Once Soundgarden came on, and this girl starts headbanging like it's Motley Crue (oh, ok. I know we used to bang out to the SG, but still) and acting like it's some trumped up 80's revival for them to be playing it ...
The kids behind the counter are always digging on me for my PJ love,
and then they start playing Emo crap (and yes some of it is legitimately Emo, once they even put on Hawthorne Heights!) ...
Anyhow ...
I'm just wondering if there is ANY HOPE of finding new music that seems to mesh with the apparently out-of-style tastes of the late Gen-Xers and Grungers ... you know I LOVE the hardstuff, and a few soft ones thrown in there ... but I can't take all this MMJ style drawn out winey-ballad rock ... yeah, sometimes it's catchy, but it just sounds stale coming out the gate to me ...
Since the start of the new millenium I would have trouble getting past one hand counting the bands I can tolerate listening to...
At the top of that list, despite the derivitative sound which reminded me of like 3 or 4 other female-led bands would probably sit
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (hey it's catchy, but it actually ROCKS ... HARD)
recently I started listening to
Wolfmother (and they are "alright". A bit too-much Sabbath meets White Stripes for me to stomache, but at least it isn't Emo)
then I would have to give a nod to
Drive-By Truckers
for desperately trying not to sound like everyother goddamn whiney band out there that i've been told i should check out ... but somehow I still wouldn't say they make me enjoy listening ...
and finaly,
sheerly for being capable of proving that you can rock with out making Michael Stipe sound like a Death Metal God ...
The White Stripes (even though i only listen when my friend plays their CDs)
So, is it utterly hopeless? Am i a fucking dinosaur rocker from a bygone era who has maintained zero cred, and has no chance of ever thinking anything rocks ever again? Or are there others out there who are equaly depressed trying to find loud rocking music with a decent message?
CAN SOMEONE RECOMMEND SOME GOOD STARTING POINTS?
BANDS?
WEBSITES TO CHECK OUT?
REFERENCES\MAGAZINES OR ANYTHING THAT IS A RESOURCE FOR NEW MUSIC THAT ISN'T FOR PUSSIES?
Look, I like my share of Violent Femmes and REM and such ... but this new breed of rock just hurts ...
Most of what i hear, sounds like
Music for kids to whine about their mothers with:
"Mommy wouldn't let me watch sunday morning cartoons, and she never let me eat Fruity Pebbles, either!"
Bands that I like and suggest downloading a song or two to check out.
Arcade Fire
The Raconteurs
Nine Black Alps
Local H
Incubus
Queens Of The Stone Age
Death From Above 1979
Eighties Matchbox Baseline Disaster check out I Could Be An Angle\m/\m/

I just want to thank EVERYONE who has responded on this thread.
Be it someone who just posted sympathies, or those of you who posted ehaustive lists of bands for me to check out.
Unfortunately, a lot of what was listed either I was old-hat stuff or new music that I have heard a bit of, and am not particularly excited about ...
but there were at least a half-dozen bands listed that i am going to brush up on. Hopefully I find something that suits my lame tastes ...
otherwise I may just shoot myself.
There is seriously nothing in my music collection that doesn't bore me to tears at this point, so if I don't find any new music, I am completely hosed.
Thanks fuckers! If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
Whilst my tastes still lean towards the 90's there is plenty of good music out there that isn't emo or nickelback. here's a quick list of bands that are currently rocking my world:
Twilight Singers (Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs new band - their new cd Powder Burns is wicked)
Wolfmother
Rocco Deluca (AMAZING - he sounds a lot like Jeff Buckley at times)
AFI
Ryan Adams
Raconteurs
Shinedown (ok they sound commerical but they have some great songs)
Alter Bridge (same vein as Shinedown)
Avenged sevenfold (amazing musicians if anything else)
Tool (well duh)
There's more decent stuff coming out this year too, there's the new Muse album, Army of Anyone (the singer from filter with the brothers from stone temple pilots) their album is meant to be incredible. oh, and Lost Prophets have a new one too, and of course Audioslave whose album is coming out this summer.0 -
Have you checked out pandora.com? It's a little Flash based radio thingy that allows you to build stations based on the music you find interesting. It asks you what bands or songs you like.. and develops a playlist based in somepart on those bands and in some part on the way their songs are put together. I have a whole grunge station with all the original so-called grunge bands on it... it plays some of those and some newer stuff that kinda fits into that sound or style.
