I love Incubus...my fav album is Make Yourself but "Crow" was a good one too.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

In my top 3 favorite bands...

    all4
  • OK to settle this I searched for Nu Metal-sounding songs on Make Yourself. Let me note that I didnt say I wouldnt like Incubus or that they WERE Nu Metal. I said they have some good stuff but that they are TOO Nu Metal to be one of my faves. Other than that it was fun to discuss this Nu Metal thing in this thread since no one flamed me for it even though I was the only one with the Nu Metal view.

    So here it goes.

Privilege - wall-of-sound-riff right at the beginning (those kind of riffing I associate with Nu Metal and not with Inie Rock), Boyd wailing over the big riff in the chorus

Nowhere Fast - Big riffing at the beginning again, and wailing over a wall-of-sound in the chorus

Consequence - Boyd's rap-like delivery in the verses ( I know that one's a bit questionable), but big wailing in the chorus again

Warmth - the way the DJ carries the song

When It Comes - rap-vocals, wailing, big riffing

Pardon Me - Riffing, rap, chorus long melodies

Out From Under - Riff at the beginning, rapstyle, chorus

I'll not bother you with Nu Metal now anymore, otherwise we'll just have to agree to disagree. On a sidenote, this is a pretty good album.

Nickelback isn't nu-metal at all. It is just shitty rock music.

And I think lumping incubus in with Nu-metal is tenuous at best. II'd just call them a meat and potatoes rock band.

Nickelback is not for sure, they're even considered a new wave of grunge.

And again, I didnt say they WERE Nu Metal (if thats what lumping in means ;))

it's ok, we forgive you. ;) haha. i STILL don't know what nu metal is, or is meant to sound like...and don't quite get the whole riff bit...but whatever. i don't concern myself much with labels, ever. i think they are a great band, with a great sound. works for me. :)

Here's some info on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal and here's a list of Nu Metal groups http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nu_metal_musical_groups

Just reading through the groups should give you an idea what they sound like.

Basically you're right, labeling is hard and not a good thing to do, but it's just human nature to have definitions and terms and putting things in categories.

i know maybe 5? bands on that list :o...and not all that well, b/c didn't love the small sampling i have heard. so given that, i just don't see the incubus connection given how much i love their music.

sure, i hear ya. all things get labelled and put neatly into their little boxes, in all media. in the visual arts it is the same. however, they don't always quite fit into those neat little categories....so i usually prefer broad terms at best.

anyhoo...call them what you like, and i'll simply call em a great band. :)

jose definitely one of THE best drummers out there.

one of my most incubus tunes.....and definitely NOT numetal in sound ;)

    Aqueous Transmission

    I'm floating down a river
Oars freed from their holes long ago
Lying face up on the floor of my vessel
    I marvel at the stars
    And feel my heart overflow

    Further down the river

    Two weeks without my lover
    I'm in this boat alone
Floating down a river named emotion
Will I make it back to shore
    Or drift into the unknown

    Further down the river

    I'm building an antenna
Transmissions will be sent when I am through
Maybe we'll meet again further down the river
And share what we both discovered...
    Then revel in the view

    Further down the river

    beautiful.
    Stay with me...

I guess we dont quite agree on Incubus then, we dont disagree either, it's just the level of greatness that we dont agree about. Well, so be it. And now go buy some Screaming Trees ;)

Just a question regarding your Nu-metal opinion. Do you consider Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger Nu-metal since alot of the songs on there are sort of wall-of-sound riffs with Cornell wailing over the top of them?

    That's a trick question isnt it? ;)

I've listened to BMF only a handful of times but I think the riffs sound different than Incubus' riffs.
