Incubus

a few days ago i posted a little about them and seemed to get reasonably favourable responses.

im on an incubus spree now..a crow left of a murder is a BRILLIANT album..i mean we speak of Ten as a record that you can listen through without a skip..i say this album is up there..i dont think theres one single 'bad' song on it.

i dont usually praise a band as being brilliant great monumental and whatnot, but incubus are really really good imho, especially on this last record. If The Strokes are good for writing catchy songs they are 'guilty' of being too repetitive, i love em but theyre musical direction is limited and they concentrate on their own little sphere, if u know what i mean.

incubus on the other hand, they dont fail in writing catchy stuff but their musical breadth is so much wider. this band especially since S.C.I.E.N.C.E must be one of the most underrated bands out there. theyre popular yes, but not acclaimed as i believe they should.

and so is this a crow left of the murder.. listen to it again and tell me if its not underrated. i love passilas and einzeger's work on this one.. einzeger has improved tremendously as a guitarist. sorry! i have to say this again, even einzeger is bloody underrated!

ah well...rambling over.

  • i miss their old bass player, his bass lines were awesome, for example: the intro to nice to know you and the main bass line in are you in?

yeah dirk lance was the best bassist for incubus' type of music, but maybe his prominence wouldnt have really been as big in the type of record that A Crow Left of The Murder is, compared to Make Yourself and especially Morning View. Like u said his bass work in Are You In? is VERY impressive.

Incubus has never stayed stagnant. Im sure the new bassist will find his own in the band soon enough

I hope the new bass player finds his "own" in the band soon, he used to play with the roots and is very good but yeah i hope to hear some incredible stuff next time around (bass wise i mean) and yeah a crow left of the murder is really good

I agree! Incubus are incredible... very talented musicians, and artists.

I got hooked on Morning View... Just A Phase, Warning, Blood on the Ground - i love these songs!

I went on vacation to California a couple years ago, and made a little pilgrimage to Morning View Dr. in Malibu.... took a picture of myself with the road sign... *embarassed* ;)

Agree with everything being said here. This band is phenomenal. :D Such variety. Such talent. A CROW LEFT OF THE MURDER is indeed brilliant! I was not prepared for that album to grab hold of me as tight as it did. I couldn't stop listening for MONTHS! HERE IN MY ROOM & SICK SAD LITTLE WORLD are 2 obsessed favs that come to mind.:o The entire album is mind-blowing though. It's one of my fav albums and INCUBUS one of my fav bands without a frickin doubt. It definitely showcases all the talent and highlights how each has vastly improved. This truely is a band that gets better and better as the years go by.

I hear ya dreamncolor, I too go through sprees where I listen to them NON-STOP. Ooooh and YES...LIVE @ THE RED ROCKS is absolutely AMAZING! :o Awwww & doin'the-evolution, ARE YOU IN? :o I LOVE that song. It's so hard to pick favs when it comes to this band cuze #1 there are TOO many greats and #2 there is, again, such variety.

2006~ a HUUUGE musical year with soooo many things to be excited about...INCUBUS being one of them! :D I can't wait to hear the new stuff. It's already guaranteed greatness in my mind. Oooo and can't wait to see them again. :D

MUCH, MUCH love for INCUBUS! :)

I really like Incubus too. :)

I'm not a huge fan and I've only got two albums Make Yourself (I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it!!!! :D:D:D ) and Crow Left of the Murder.
but I've heard other songs from them too and I've liked them all! :D

Where are they? What's going on with them? We want new music (and a tour would be nice!)

I love Einzigers guitar work especially on A Crow. The guy has a great rig (I'm a little bit of a gear nut)

Alive at Red Rocks is impressive. I've liked them for a while, and I like the odd style in some cases because it precludes much of the albums from being as overplayed as thier hits.

Morning View was by far my least favorite album, since it's been stolen I haven't really missed it. I liked a few tracks, but the majority was eh...

A Crow, is really really good. Especially the guitar stuff.

with the release of "morning view", I was convinced they'd be "the next big thing" in rock...
    Loved :
    Nice to know you

    Warning
    ETC..

Great CD to crank in the car too!

but the follow up "Crow" was a musical diapointment IMO..

I still think Morning View is one of the best CD's of a "newer band" and am keeping my fingers crossed for a strong return to the MV style on their next CD..

PS: Kudos to Incubus for releasing Offfical bootlegs agka Pearl Jam...

    Live for Live boots!

For their general sound. Some people would say that they have a DJ and that would make them Nu Metal. But thats just nonsense. I think it's rather how they sound as a whole. Big riff at the beginning of a song, then more mellow verses and one big noisy guitar attack and Boyd's wailing over it as a chorus. Thats what Nu Metal sounds to me anyway. Staind are certainly Nu Metal and I think Incubus sounds way more like Staind than they sound like PJ. Maybe calling them Nu Metal takes it a bit too far but I think they're rather that than alt rock. But I guess this labeling thing is fuzzy anyway. Can anyone relate to what I've just said?

Wow. I can think of very few Incubus songs that meet that description. I think Incubus sounds way more like Pearl Jam than they do Staind. Have you listened to their entire albums? Incubus is just a plain old rock band, in my opinion.

I've listened to Make Yourself and Morning View. And they do this wall-of-sound riffing with Boyd wailing a lot if you ask me. And I associate that with Nu Metal. Thats why I'm not so crazy about them because it's not really original to create a wall-of-sound riff instead of actually working one out. I've searched the internet a bit and there are a few sites associating them with Nu Metal so I'm probably not completely off here. Wikipedia has them in their list of Nu Metal groups for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nu_metal_musical_groups
but has them as "alternative rock" in the article.

    They are so NOT Nu-Metal!

They are just rock in the same genre as Faith No More.

Don't compare this band with any of those Nu-metal acts.

Their last two albums just prove that they are a talented rock act.

I think they are far from Nu-Metal...They definately have their roots in the 90's so called grunge sound. On morning view and A Crow Left of The Murder they have more of a clasic rock sound, although not quite classic rock, much similar to pearl Jam's early music or perhaps Rage against the Machine.

Korn has their roots in the 90's sound as well and they are considered the prototypical Nu Metal act. I havent heard much of their last record but you're right that they changed their style around with Morning View. I think the problem with Nu Metal is that it's seen really negative and that it's almost an insult to call a band that. The reason for that probably is that a lot of Nu Metal acts just plain suck. But why shouldnt it be possible to fuse Nu Metal influences into a good sound?

Let me note that I dont use that term in an insulting way. I kinda like Incubus but the reason why I'm not crazy about them is that their sound has Nu Metalish tendencies.

i have no idea what nu metal is, doesn't sound very appealing from what you say either. :p however, i also don't think incubus sound like pearl jam either. not at all. i think incubus sounds like, well, incubus. early on, especially their basslines, reminded me of the chili peppers. more in an homage sorta way, not a rip-off, but an influence. nowadays, i think they have their own sound...unique to them.

personally, i think they have really rich musical textures.....great basslines....and percussion! jose is a fecking phenomenal drummer...amazing. :) no matter what, to me, a great band. love their music.
    Stay with me...

When I think of NU Metal, I think of Mesa Boogie triple Rectifiers, the "Civic.com" "Punk" tour and drop D tuned Paul Reed Smiths solid bodies (Einziger plays a PRS Hollowbody Spruce). Staind Yes, absolutely, The Deftones, Korn, even throw Good Charlotte, Linkin Park and Nickleback even Slipknot in there.

Incubus no, not even close. It's a socal sound definately but far from Nu Metal the way I think of Nu Metal. They are fairly unique actually, even if the parts are similar to other bands. Einziger does use Mesas but they are mark ones (hot rodded fenders essentially) and others I'm sure that aren't really focused on gained out madness it's more of an effected guitar kind of tone with heavy phasing and the like than only heavy driving distortion. The solos owe more to jam bands than Nu Metal bands. His guitar tone is more Johnny Greenwood than Papa Roach. That, and they have more obvious musical talent than any of the Nu Metal bands I mentioned.

I definately see where you are coming from, I just don't agree that's quite where they are.
