The top 98 albums of the 90's

edited August 2006 in Other Music
Quite a while back I created a thread where I ranked all of the albums I own from 2000-now based on ranking all the songs on the albums on my Ipod (1 star-5 stars). After ranking the songs I added up all the ratings to come up with a total album score and then divided that number by the total possible score for that album (all songs ranked a 5). Kind of a nerdy thing to do, I would agree, but ranking songs makes the time on an airplane just fly by, believe me.

So now I've done the same thing for all the album's I own from the 90's. I look back very fondly on that decade's music. I was in high school as the decade started and then went on to college for the middle to late part, so these albums hold a lot of great memories for me, as I'm sure they do to many of you. Wow, someone has the same musical taste as I do! No, I'm serious. I have almost all of those albums you listed-now I'm going to have to check out some of the others.

But you didn't list any U2 - I think that that's the only reason you and I can't be in a serious relationship together, and because of the fact that I have a suspicion that you might be a guy, and I'm a guy.

    a few comments

    NWA was 1988
    Built To Spill
    Sonic Youth
    Pavement's two best albums
    Loveless
    Laughing Stock
    F#A#infinity
    Spiderland
    Aeroplane Over The Sea
Pinkerton was way better than Blue
    Metal

Other than that, not the worst list I've seen. Interesting choice for #1

Cool list......It's always great seeing other Black Crowes fans on the board. I'm slowy getting into Son Volt too. I'm planning on hittin up those DBT/SonVolt dates this year.
  • Mother Milk cane out in '89. Maybe put u2 album to make the guy a few posts back happy...on a pearl jam message board...hmmmm

    oops.

Your'e right on Mother's Milk AND Straight Outta Compton

Growing up in Kansas in an average middle class neighborhood, that whole gangsta rap thing took awhile to get to us. i could have sworn it came out in '90.

As far as the U2, I do think Achtung Baby would be somewhere on that list but I don't own it. Never bought it for some reason, but I'll get around to it one of these days. Same goes for PJ's "Ten". That's the only PJ record I don't have.

Sorry to disappoint you spnkri, but I am a guy. Plus I'm married. Plus I'm not gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The Crowes are just a great band who I think are criminally underrated. I just saw a live set of theirs that was filmed in San Fransisco and was shown on the High-Def channel HDNET. Reminded me what a great live act they are. I've seen them 4 times and they are the only band that rivals PJ in a live setting for me.

good calls on the Sonic Youth and Pavement. Slanted and Enchanted is great, and would be high on my list, I just don't own it - yet.

I've not heard of many of the others you list, but I would have to disagree with you about Pinkerton. It has some hight points, but is nowhere near as consistently good as Blue IMO. Sadly, after Pinkerton their stuff really falls off the cliff.

I dunno, I'll take everything on Pinkerton from "Across The Sea" to "Butterfly" and like it more than anything on Blue (with possible exceptions to "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" and "Only In Dreams"). Also, "Across The Sea" is my favourite Weezer song ever. I'm going to throw it on right after Built To Spill ends.

Speaking of which - buy Built To Spill's Perfect From Now On first chance you get. You'd love it.

Excellent choices. My personal favorite Weezer song is Only In Dreams. Excellent stuff. I just sent you a PM about a possible trade.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

  • I can tell that you're a Radiohead fan and also that you enjoyed The Bends and OK Computer. So I have one question: Where is Pablo Honey? I don't know about you but I would have at least put it in the top 70 maybe 80. It's nowhere near The Bends or OK Computer but come on, it's Radiohead. Also, I've noticed that many "hardcore" PJ fans don't put Vitalogy or Yield as highly as other PJ releases. I would consider myself a fairly big fan of them and I would say that they are two of my favorites. Good call on Vs. being #1 PJ album. Why isn't Grace in the top 10? That album is excellent. I guess that's why we aren't the same person...we have different opinions. I like the list though. It's always interesting seeing other people's opinions on music.

If you ask me, Grace is overrated and Pablo Honey just plain sucks.

pablo honey doesnt suck, YOU SUCK.
  • but seriously, pablo honey was good. i would have a list similar to this one except ONE THROUGH FIVE WOULD BE PEARL JAM ALBUMS.
  • EchoesEchoes Posts: 1,279
oops, doubly post that for some reason.

Personally, PH is the weakest Radiohead album by a mile. Only one I don't own, only one I won't buy.

  • yea........ i know.
  • you think it's weaker than the newest one?

definately. HTTT has brilliant songs like "Sit Down, Stand Up" on it. Sure it is sketchy at best, but I still like the whole thing better than Pablo Honey.

No Dinosaur Jr, Eleven, Screaming Trees, Blind Melon, Mudhoney, dude you need to check out these bands and be prepared to make changes:)
Also Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning and The Pixies - Tromp Le Monde, two of the ninties finest albums imo.

edit: HOLY FUCKBALLS where is Dirt by Alice in Chains?

Not sure if this is a sarcastic comment (my meter must be on the fritz)
but 3 snakes is not a good album. by far the weakest Crowes effort. Thankfully they rebounded with By Your Side.
Cracked Rear View is not so great either, which is why both of these are near the bottom of the list.

I also agree about Pablo Honey. Can't get into that one at all.

Whoever mentioned the Pixies, I'll give you that. That's a band I've heard a bit of and liked but never really taken the time get into. One of these days....

    Echoes-

I'll check out the Built to Spill record. thanks for the recommendation.

    Very cool list.

I did not see any cracker on there. I thought they might be a band you like they have a little bit of an alt country vibe like uncle tupelo.

My list would be a bit different, but then again that's why it's my list and not yours :)
