Midnight Oil is one of the greatest hits CD's I have, so they didn't make the list, but I agree with you. Great band. I had Diesel and Dust on cassette back in the day and played the hell out of it. Good album. i remember playing that and Rattle & Hum a lot back in Jr. High. Need to pick it up on CD and it would probably be in my top 10 for the decade. Most of their other records came out in the 90's to my knowledge. Do they have another one from the 80's that's any good besides D&D?

I had a friend who was a fan. I heard some stuff, not bad even if I never gor around to really check them out.

I think Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy was one of the better albums of the 80's along with many of the others mentioned already. The Clash - Sandinista should definitely be somewhere too and is a must have IMO.

How about your collections? Are they especially heavy on any one period?

Most of my records are probably from the 90's or 00's, which makes sense because that was the majority of my being alive. I've got some stuff from the 70's, but I still have a decent amount of 80's albums, although not so many as some of the other decades.

I've heard good things about Sandinista, but I've not heard a single note of the actual record. I'll have to look into that one.

I think this is now really lacking some of the classic 80's music and were 3 pages in.
As mentioned earlier Soundgardens Ultramega OK and Louder Than Love(although I think LTL came out in '90)
Screaming Trees, Buzz Factory, Even If And Especially When, oh man two killer albums Invisible Lantern is a belter also.
Mark Lanegan's, The Winding Sheet came out in 89 not as good as WFTHG but a classic all the same.
I personally am not a fan of The Smiths, but you cant deny they're impact in the 80's.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mothers Milk and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan with out a doubt the two albums for me that contest BSSM as the Chilis best as well as Freaky Styley, three classic albums.
    Mudhoney s/t and Superfuzz Bigmuff.
Green River, Devo, PIL, Neil Young, The Cure, The Melvins, Skin Yard, NoFx, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Black Flag, Millions of Dead Cops and who the freak could leave Tiffany out.:D

these are basically the best of the 80's:

    Rain Dogs - Tom Waits
Frank's Wild Years - Tom Waits
You're Living All Over Me - Dinosaur Jr.
    Bug - Dinosaur Jr.
Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia - Guided by Voices
    Murmur - REM

piss I forgot the Replacements - Let it BE/Tim

Whoever hasn't heard YLAOM by Dinosaur Jr. should really get around to checking that record out. It probably has the greatest guitar sound ever recorded. It's blistering.

Some really good suggestions there. Thanks transplant. See this is why I posted this thread. I'm looking forward to checking some of these guys out, with the exception of Bad Religion which I don't care for. I've heard some Husker Du and it's not bad so that is one that I will definitely investigate further, as is the Replacements.

BTW I'm working on my 70's list now and a 60's list will follow that one. Just fair warning for everyone!!!

Thank you. I was wondering when you see some of these folks mentioning arists derivative of those above. If you fancy yourself sort of alternative, how could "Let It Be" and "Tim" by the Replacements not be on that list? Also, how the hell did the shmaltz ballad ridden Aerosmith make the cut? Bob Mould, awesome, and Candy Apple Grey, mmmmmm. Anybody heard of the Suburbs? A truly unique band.

I don't fancy myself anything other than a lover of many types of music. As for Aerosmith, what can I tell you? Kind of a guilty pleasure for me. You're gonna see them show up a lot on my 70's list. Their older stuff is just good, straightforward blues-based rock n roll. I will give you that they went WAY downhill in the past 10-15 years. Pump is the last CD of theirs that I purchased. While it has its share of garbage, some tracks retain their earlier sound.

  • Dont know if its been mentioned before, but The Smiths released some killer albums, mainly Hatful of Hollow, Queen Is Dead or Meat Is Murder.
  • EchoesEchoes Posts: 1,279
Hatful Of Hollow is apparently a greatest hits/B-sides/Peel session release, which I just found out recently.

    It slays, though
    printf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");
  • Absolutely! But according to wikipedia they released directly after thier debut, so its not so much as a best of, as a collection of b-sides/alternative versions that was made easily available. But yeh, its probably my favourite smiths album regardless.

    God this forum is packed...

Was Television in the 1980s? Marquee Moon is a great album, but I think that was released in 1978. Well, look into them anyway.

    REM - Out of Time
    U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
The Cure - Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me
    The Cure - Disintegration
The Cure - Boys don't Cry
New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain

These are for me -among others, like REM-Green, U2- Joshua Tree, GN'R-Appetite for Destruction- essential 80's records.
