Alright, i'm not going to a big debate over varying degrees of blackness. Are you saying though that if your great great great grandfather was black, you are black as well? I believe this thread was made about african american band members... jack johnson and de la rocha are not african american.

I just though it was about black artists. I wasn't aware you needed to have african roots. In India you have black people as well can't they add to rock?
I have that rainy album what's it called, anyway he seems black to me.

Not where I come from. Being of color isn't the same as having African roots.
It was about black people in rock, no where was it stated that had to have African roots.
And I wonder about this because rock is so fucking white.

In Holland as well. At concerts there often is no one of color. At festivals it's a little better, but not much. And in my life I only met 2 colored guys and one girl who were into rock. Now I knew rock was big in South America so it must be better there.

    for sure.

but you know, we don't care much about that race thing here. at least not in rock concerts.

people are busy enough rockin' their hearts out...

Well I'm not troubled with it at the concert. But I do find it strange that the best guitar player ever is a black guy and he is not recognised by people of his own race.
He himself used to ask after a gig how many black people were there?
And to be honest I don't like rap or today’s R&B or soul and that is what the musical culture is over here. So I always wonder why Hendrix doesn't appeal equally. Rock owes agreat deal of gratitude to black artists, and now there aren't so many resectable black artists, at least not in my view. But who can argue about taste.

He is mentioned. But there is no harm in mentioning him twice.

    Jack Johnson

I think you may be confused with Black Jack Johnson, the band fronted by Mos Def. Or John Arthur "Jack" Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion (He beat Tommy Burns in '08). Though, he wasn't much for making anything but chin music.

Hahaha. Now you people keep insisting he isn't black. Now I have only got Brushfire fairytales and the guy on the cover really seems black to me. So tell me isn't that Jack Johnson?

Dude. When I first saw that album, I thought the same thing. For real. But that's the photo. Jack Johnson, the guy who splits time between his acoustic gee-tar and a surfboard, the same one on the cover of said album, is not black.

He has many faces. He really seems black on that photo.
    That is so weird. Hahaha.
    Thanks for the link

but maybe it was only the light used at that photo...

That would be Jack Johnson and no he isn't black, he just looks like it on the cover.
    For the record:
    Latino doesn't equal black
Indian (both kinds) doesn't equal black
Black is anyone who has African roots whether they are from a Caribbean country that has African heritage or not. Meaning, Wyclef Jean is black.
Back to the topic at hand. Wyclef is black and he plays the guitar pretty damn well. He's a true musician.

I wasn't excluding them, I was just giving an example of people who are black that may not be considered black by some.

    Yeah, that's right.
But catefrances just told me that rage guy is Mexican. But the way I see him he still is black even if he is from Mexico. Maybe it's because we don't have that much latino's here. Or because of his dread's.That's just what I'm used to in my country. What's his name seems colored to me. But that's just it. We don't really speak of someone being black, just being of color. And over here that could be light or dark. Like you said for instance people from the Caribbean.

Karma, where are you from? You keep saying "where I'm from." Just out of curiosity sake. Anyway, sorry for the disagreement earlier. Different cultures view things differently. I as well as a lot of other people need to remember that.

Yeah I remembered what you said, it just was more quick this way. I should have said that he was part Mexican blood. But where is Sinaloan. I think I know but not all the names in English are the same in dutch. Is it African?

    I'm from Holland.
    And no harm done.
Most of the time I do not have a problem, but sometimes I find that thinking in a different language than English is a bit of a complication on this forum.
I think in Dutch and then find the English words, easier subjects make it less complicated. But here you saw the cultural difference as well as a difference in language.

Hold it right there, my friend. You have much homework to do if you think that it started with Jimi.

    Chuck Berry
    Little Richard
Willie Dixon (without whom there'd be no Led Zeppelin)
    Muddy Waters
    John Lee Hooker
    Bo Diddley
    Lightning Hopkins
    Robert Johnson
    Howlin' Wolf
    Huddy Leadbetter
    Bukka White
    Elmore James

There...that is a good start for ya. :)
