  • Don't know how obscure you're trying to get, but one of the better known bands is Gov't Mule. I was listening to The Deepest End this morning.... It's a great Double CD with some AWESOME jams....
  • Phish, Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, Umphrey's Mcggee, ostyerhead, anything by Les Claypool, just to get ya started. I'm just getting into it myself, but after seeing widespread at B'roo I'm now full into the jam scene.
  • Not a big fan of the scene, but Gov't Mule is excellent. Warren Haynes is a beast!

  • the live double disc of traffic live is really good
dave matthews listener supported has some nice jams
    david gilmour live
pink floyds pulse dvd and cd
    fleetwood mac the dance

Mike Gordon is touring right now if you want to check him out. He was the bass player from Phish. I liked Phish ok (probably less than I would have if I hadn't dated a total phan who listened to them all the time), but I like Mike's stuff a little better. He is definitely a great bass player.

  • just remember the term "jam band" is almost as generic as "grunge band"

many will argue that all jam bands sound alike, which is just untrue. personally, two of my favorite bands (besides PJ obviously) are moe. and the disco biscuits. i can see a diehard PJ fan digging moe. much more than they would the disco biscuits.

but i'll throw another one out there for you: RAQ. i can definitely see PJ fans liking RAQ b/c they don't always jam for the sake of jamming. and they have that rock element. too bad their touring schedule has slowed down.

he is my shameless plug for RAQ (two shows i taped earlier this year). if your unfamiliar with the LMA, you can stream them before you d/l. there are a bunch of jambands included:

^^^ gordon was pretty good in philly on sunday. he played some goofy covers though: takin' it to the streets (doobies) and things that make you go hmm (c+c)

Disco Biscuit do not blow. They're not great, but they sure don't blow. Have you never been to one of their shows? Just awesome. Love the techno/rock angle.

what type of jam bands do you currently listen to?

Moe. is the best one out there today (2 guitars give it alittle heavier feel than bands like the dead and phish).

If you want trance/techno type jamband, the disco biscuts are good but have the sketchiest fan base I've ever seen.

Raq is very good, but will be taking a break for a while so it's tough to get into a band as they are about to take a break, but def. still give them a listen (moe. is also, but returing sometime in 2009)

As somebody who has seen a lot of jambands live, I would highly recommend moe. and the breakfast (timmy p from the b'fast is one of the best guitar players out there). And if you are into moe. and want the best weekend of your life, attend moe.down over labor day weekend...it's their festival and is amazing (not too big either which is very nice)

aint' that the truth! 5th year in a row for me. it's gonna be an even bigger blast this year given the break their taking.

    no rainboe. please ;)

Robert Randolph is awesome..... Saw him open for Clapton in Indy a few years back..... I'd forgotten about them, but they're really good!
  • Might I suggest....
    Dead Meadow
    Galactic
    moe.
