they DEFINETLY kick started it. Made it popular.

The Strokes were on a major label, thats not indie. I think you are confusing their "garage rock" sound with being indie. The Indie scene was around a long time before the Strokes.
  • Is it Seattle? I'm from Seattle, so I am more familiar with the bands from 'seattle (Washington)

Bands generally considered being 'from' Seattle:
    Pearl jam
    Alice in Chains
    Nirvana
    Soundgarden
    Queensryche
    Screaming Trees
    Death Cab for Cutie
    Modest Mouse
    Foo Fighters
    Mudhoney
    The Presidents of the USA

And to a lesser extent these bands (not everyone knows about them):
    The Posies
    Super Deluxe
    Harvey Danger
SDRE (Are they generally thought of as a seattle band?)
    Sleater Kinney
    Pedro the Lion
    Sky Cries Mary

People feel free to fill in the gaps, or other cities that have had a bigger impact.
I think you'll find you missed a certain someone...

Yea Sleater Kinney is a decent all chic band.
Are they named after the Sleater Kinney Ave exit in Olympia?
    Don't forget about Grunt-Truck.
Maybe they are no more, i dunno.
99.9 KISW does that local bands battle on the radio.
Remember that funny ass dj mofo's bands named Courtney Killed Kurt.
Im pritty sure they had to change names, i dunno.
    He doesn't mention it anymore.
(Some funny stuff is that dudes skits on chinese pizza).
Seattle does kick some ass in the tuneage department.
So many local bands around here the list is endless.
Oh I dont live in Seattle but within 2 hours of it.
    Western WA kicks ass.

If you say 25-30 years, then you definitely must include Seattle in the discussion. If you limit it to 20 years, Seattle could arguably not be one of the top contenders because of the lack of longevity from some of those bands you listed.

Also, you didn't set the context as American music so I could also add London to the mix. Honestly, I don't know how New York, Los Angeles and London aren't the front-runners here. No matter where an artist comes from, that's where the music is produced, marketed, and reported on.

If you are simply getting at which city gives birth to the best careers in music you're going to have a hard time winning that argument at all. There are interesting and talent-laden scenes all over. Austin, Texas, should be chiming in any minute now, too...
