Is it Seattle? I'm from Seattle, so I am more familiar with the bands from 'seattle (Washington)

Bands generally considered being 'from' Seattle:
Pearl jam
Alice in Chains
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Queensryche
Screaming Trees
Death Cab for Cutie
Modest Mouse
Foo Fighters
Mudhoney
The Presidents of the USA

And to a lesser extent these bands (not everyone knows about them):
The Posies
Super Deluxe
Harvey Danger
SDRE (Are they generally thought of as a seattle band?)
Sleater Kinney
Pedro the Lion
Sky Cries Mary

People feel free to fill in the gaps, or other cities that have had a bigger impact.

  • New York City and Los Angeles were the PRIMARY cities driving rap music to the top and NO OTHER MUSIC has had more impact on the musical landscape of all genres and society WORLDWIDE than rap in the past 20 years.

Seattle changed the face of rock music for a time...but then you can say the same about different cities and genres every few years. This transcends any particular genre and city.

  • seattle definitely, thats why we are all on this board. Seattle changed my life. It was a godsend.

That said, the current Canadian/Montreal indie rock scene really is going strong. It is making a huge statement.

  • For rock music in the last 20 years it's Seattle. But that's taking out of the equation two of the cities putting out most of the big music all the time, New York and L.A. Just too much to ignore. Also, I believe the whole indie scene came from New York in general terms. I know the Strokes are from there and they pretty much kick started it.

At age 12, Shakur enrolled in Harlem's famous "127th Street Ensemble." His first major role with this acting troupe was as Travis in A Raisin in the Sun. In 1984, his family relocated to Baltimore. After completing his sophomore year at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School he transferred to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied acting, poetry, and jazz. He performed in Shakespeare plays and in the role of the Mouse King in The Nutcracker.
2pac, who grew up in Baltimore, New York, and later Marin City, moved to Oakland in January 1989
    died 1996

i think youre mistaken....and he also didnt live in oakland from 89 on either....he relocated to LA at some point....

In terms of music in general, I have to agree with pjny on this one. Nothing can compare to the impact that rap and hip hop have had on the music scene over the past 20 years.
