I like the Doors but come on! I just watched the 1991 movie and supposedly they got kicked out of the whiskey go go in 1966 (oops) for singing this:

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
Ill never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...strangers hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

Theres danger on the edge of town
Ride the kings highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...hes old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and well do the rest

The blue bus is callin us
The blue bus is callin us
Driver, where you taken us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...i want to...fuck you

Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin a blue rock
Cmon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But youll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

a terrible song?!!!?! are you serious? if the doors only made one contribution to music history it was this song. seriously brilliant. who cares if the lyrics are random or whatever? the music is stunning. watch the opening sequence of apocalypse now with The End playing.... its one the greatest moments in film history. stunning song.

and by the way, I think you mean 1966, not 96 ;)

lol, I mean it's not funny, but yes of course, '66. I was in a hurry.

I've never heard it before until the Doors' movie....never saw apocalypse now (not my kind of movie!)

did you see the doors' movie? was it cheesy to you?

why did he have to die WHY??????? his voice was hypnotizing.

If by terrible you mean haunting, bone-chilling to a life-altering degree, then sure... a terrible, beautiful song :)
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

    ^^^^ I agree!!!

That song is magnificant. Lyrically it's neither top or bottom of Morrison's stuff, but SERIOUSLY the music is amazing. So simple and subtle but breathtakingly put together.

but I don't remember the music....the words bothered me....plus I have only heard it once during the movie (I was shocked)....of course when I listened to the clip on Amazon just now, it was the very beginning of the song.

    anyone wanna upload this? :p

I would but I've had to resort to deleting most of my music as soon as I put it on my ipod (bought a frigging 80 gig a couple months ago).

Yeah okay. There is always one person that has to go to extremes.

Just like there are 3 great writers.

Howard Zinn, Eric Carl, and Ed Vedder.

He was exploring freud's Oedipus complex where the patient has homicidal thoughts about his father and sexual thoughts for his mother. Morrison had a pretty bad relationship with his parents. I think ultimately he was just trying to be provocative.

"The End" is a looooong song, but you're willing to completely write off it's brilliance because there's one tiny section that you don't like?

There's plenty of incredible songs, albums and movies where there's SOMETHING about them I don't like, but I don't make blanket judgments about the entire piece based on that. Hell, how about deciding whether a PERSON is good or bad based on a tiny sample of their life? ;)

in the movie it is quite plainly stated that they got kicked out because he said onstage that he wanted to fuck his mother, which even members of the band (i.e. john densmore) were not expecting him to say.........up until that point the whole audience, and even the people working at the club, were mesmerised.

and fuck off, it is a great film........

It was a great song even before it was used in Apocalypse Now, when I used to listen to it late at night (for added effect.) I didn't see the Doors movie ... I missed the real Jim too much to want to see him portrayed by an actor ... plus I got all the info I needed from reading "No One Here Gets Out Alive." Jeez, I'm dating myself big time, aren't I?

Anyway, when you're digging through the vinyl bins, look for this one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A2so20rnac489

    I highly recommend it. :)
