Beuna, could you please stop spamming this thread with repeated posts? That would be appreciated. If you'd care to discuss the points of the CD's on people's lists, by all means, do so, but running through people's lists and posting what you thought was good, with absolutely zero reasoning, is not only more dickish than I have ever been, but annoying as hell.

if you would, will you explain why you cut most of those albums off of my list, at the least, without resorting to a pathetic answer like "I didn't like it" or " I didn't hear it"? I''m honestly curious.

Oh no, what I meant could probably be have been conveyed more specifically as :

"In the sprit of getting the best representation of music that came out this year, I listened to SOAD, and TOD, and The Foo Fighters. However, I don't consider them good enough to consider breaching the top 25."

That any better? Trustme, I love tthe albums on my top 25. I don't do the wole "ranking high because they are popular" thing, otherwise you probably would have seen more indiehip bands like Clap Your Hands Say yeah! and Franz Ferdinand (ugh) on that list.

And child of the 80's, I'll try to be more pretentious, if you really want. But I do honestly think that most bands on the radio, in spite of having some songs/albums in the past, are pretty much shit nowadays. New releases by The Foos, Audioslave, Colplay SOAD etc etc all confirmed this (although that SOAD wasn't terrible, the first one, anyways)

    My mistake, misunderstood you then.

You do come off sounding very pretentious a lot though. Seems you realize that though and don't really mind. Just pointing that out, thanks for the explaination.

Well, when you flat out say the radio sucks and you hate almost all of the CDs that cam out by mainstream bands this year, it is really hard to NOT sound pretentious.

Least you aren't a prick about it like Buena. Ah well, all was said and done on that topic. I'll stick to liking the few mainstream bands that play music good to my ears and have a passion about it(instead of a formula).

did you hear The New Pornographers album this year?

Just wondering, you seem open to discussion so i thought I would take you up on the offer.

i love a lot of the albums mentioned above, incl. the white stripes, death cab, etc.

one album that i haven't seen mentioned is mike doughty's "haughty melodic." fantastic fucking album from the former frontman of the soul coughing. check it out if you get the chance.

No, I haven't. It is one of the few relatively high profile releases that I didn't get a chance to listen to. I heard one single, "Streets Of Fire," and while inoffensive, I don't think it all that great. I will probably get it one of these days, but right now, it isn't very high on my priorities list. What did you think of it?

I loved it, that's why I asked. I didn't know "Streets of Fire" was a single, not a bad song, but definitely at least 5 or 6 others I would have considered better single quality songs, interesting. The only single I knew of was "Use It", I caught the video online somewhere a little while back.

The album just plays like Broken Social Scene-lite. The Canadian thing is obvious, but just in that there are so many people involved with both of the bands, switching songwriters and lead singers in and out throughout the whole album. Really similar, but The New Pornographers have a much more pop feel to them, which definitely isn't a bad thing. They are my top two albums of the year actually.

While it doesn't exactly follow the sound of BSS, the collective nature of the band definately creates a link. NP is a west coast thing, If I remember properly.

I am nnot sure if it was the single from the album, but it was the one I heard.

I have heard NP are big in Toronto(forgive my complete ignoracne about Canada's geography, but I believe Toronto is on the East coast?). Doesn't mean they are from there, just heard they are big there, for whatever that is worth.

I wouldn't think it was a single, doesnt have many "single qualities" really, but I'm not sure. And I agree, the actual musical links between BSS and NP are slim, but the way that so many musicians come together to create a singular piece of work that actualy sounds like a singular piece of work is just amazing.

  • This is was surprisingly good year for new albums, even without new Pearl Jam or Radiohead. I can't think of 25, but I'll offer these five as my favorites:

Queens of the Stone Age ~ Lullabies to Paralyze
    Gorillaz ~ Demon Days
    NIN ~ With Teeth
    Sleater-Kinney ~ The Woods
Foo Fighters ~ In Your Honor

don't you wish though that he would sing....maybe just a song or 2? I can understand it is their 'uniqueness' I guess, but the music kicks too much ass to not have someone howling over them on occasion.

I have tried this one. I don't know how one can get through Grass without the desire to jam something sharp in your ear to make the noise stop. I'll give them credit though, original as one can get this day in age.

as far as i am aware, they are from vancouver.

i never got into them when 'mass romantic' came out. i bought it after all the year end lists came out. my musical tastes have changed slightly since then so i'll have to see if i can find some samples or mp3 or something...

I don't think it is as great as We Shall All Be Healed or Tallahasse, but it was still a really good album

I personally don't mind Craig Finn's manic preaching over the racously fun music they make. I know a lot of people do, and a lot find him an insufferable douche (which I can see). It is definately their uniqueness, and he definately speaks to a lot of people. I personally just love the flow of the album, the tightness of the band, and of course, the delivery. The keyboard player was kind of a dick when we saw them, though

They opened for Opeth? Fuck what a great show that must have been. I already had tickets to the Hold Steady that night. Man, that would have fabulous

Definately experimental, and if they didn't make at lest a few people make comments like that, then they aren't doing their job right. The pysch-induced "Bees" is a great track just to shit and absorb, and the "Banshee Beat" - "Daffy Duck" - "Loch Raven" trio is probably some of my favourite music all year. And about "Grass," well it has its own poppy charm - the screaming was never that big of a put-off for me.

    Well, maybe a little.

Thanks for the comments, more are welcome, positive or negative
