Buckley's Hallelujah is peerless, I agree.
Otherwise, both Pearl Jam and Marliyn Manson do great covers.

    Pearl Jam:
Sitting at the dock of the bay (otis redding)
Rocking in the free world (n young)
    Little Wing (hendrix)
    Leaving Here (the who)

    Marilyn Manson:
    Sweet Dreams (eurythmics)
Five to one (Doors) <- really check out this one. It's really a great heavy song
Suicide is painless (? the MASH song)
    Tainted Love (?)

    others:
The Tea Party: Paint It Black (rolling stones)
Faith No More: War Pigs (sabbath)
Faith No More: Easy (lionel richie)
    Motorpsycho: Black To Comm (MC5)
Motorpsycho: California Dreaming (Mamas and the papas ?)
    Johnny Cash: Hurt (NIN)
Primus (w/ ozzie): Nativity in Black (Sabbath)
Nirvana: Man who sold the world (Bowie)

I've probably forgotten a bunch, but these stand out.

    Peace
    Dan

I didn't know Bowie did a version of Across the Universe, but Rufus Wainwright does an amazing version as well.

    Joe Strummer - Redemption Song

That is a brilliant version. I love the stuff Joe Strummer did Mescaleros. I personally prefer the version with The Mescaleros more than the version with Johnny Cash
