The wind is blowing cold
Have we lost our way tonight?
Have we lost our hope to sorrow?

Feels like were all alone
Running further from what’s right
And there are no more heroes to follow

So what are we becoming?
Where did we go wrong?

    Neil is the man.

I'll throw jeff tweedy in there for a more recent musician that i think rocks in the songwriting department.

Surprise, I am going to fight the urge to take on the Tremonti listing. Just for you. But it's killing me. It really is.

I am just going to do living, active songwriters. My list:

    Eddie Vedder
James Mercer (The Shins; this third album has cemented it. Brilliant.)
    Isaac Brock
    Bonnie "Prince" Billy (Will Oldham)
    Beck
    Neil Finn
    Jeff Tweedy
    Lindsay Buckingham
    Pete Townshend
    Thom Yorke
    Trent Reznor
    Neil Young
    Chris Cornell
    Ben Folds
    Cedric Bixler Zavala
    Brandon Boyd
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

Are we talkin' dead or still alive? I guess I'll go with alive (in no particular order):

    Tom Waits
    Neil Young
    Bob Dylan
    Jeff Tweedy
    Bruce Springsteen
    Gord Downie (the tragically hip)
    John K. Samson (the weakerthans)
    Sarah Harmer
    Joni Mitchell
    Steve Earle
Ron Hawkins (lowest of the low)
    Eddie Vedder
    Patterson Hood/Jason Isbell/Mike Cooley (drive-by truckers)
    Ron Sexsmith
    Bono & the Edge
    A.C. Newman (new pornographers)
    Neko Case
    Martin Tielli/Dave Bidini/Tim Vesely (rheostatics)
    Jay Farrar (son volt/uncle tupelo)
    Paul Simon
    Ryan Adams
    Paul Westerberg
    Matt Mays
    Kathleen Edwards
David Hidalgo/Louie Perez/Cesar Rosas (los lobos)
    Tom Petty
    Daniel Lanois
    K-OS
    Fiona Apple
Peter Garrett/Rob Hirst/Jim Moginie (midnight oil)
    Micheal Timmins (cowboy junkies)
    Joel Plaskett
    Michael Stipe/Peter Buck/Mike Mills
    Thom Yorke
    Dave Grohl
    Sam Roberts
    Hayden
    Aimee Mann
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow
    I'll ride the wave
    Where it takes me
    I'll hold the pain
    Release me
  • There is one obvious omission in almost all of the lists here.

Paul Westerberg is a friggin genius.
    one foot in the door
