A good way to check out bands is myspace. I kn ow lots of people dont like it but whenever I hear about a new band, I look them up there and usually I can listen to 2-4 songs, get a feel for them and decide if I wanna buy an album or not.
Dont know if these will be to your taste, nothing at all like PJ/Soundgarden etc. Still really cool bands though. Think their are a couple bands in the US with the names the Fratellis and Yeti but these are all from UK.

Tell them you love them. Never let the mundane, the unimportant, or worse, the misunderstood, be the final words of parting.

I saw Ladyhawk at a Destroyer show last night and they were pretty damn good for a rock type band. Their first album should be coming out sometime this year, from talking to a booking rep the other night

I just thought the easiest way to hear some songs is not looking for their band sites but using the search function of myspace. But hey, you already know that
Well, do you need a lot of what you've got to survive?
