Not trying to nitpick, but anyone else notice that Bruce Sirius radio plays a lot of poor sounding audience recordings? I guess you have to expect that for 70s shows and I may just be spoiled by PJ. :?

I agree. I have heard bootlegs from a couple years ago that are very poor sounding. I think many of them are audience recordings. Not sure if Bruce records his shows via soundboard. It sure doesn't sound like it.

Well, of course we are spoiled by PJ. ;) I used Wikipedia for his tours to see if what shows were broadcast on the radio and also Brucebase to learn about some shows having a good audience recording. A lot of the famous '78 shows (like 12/15) were broadcast on the radio. Some 1980 shows have a good audience recording (the famous 11/5 show, the night after Reagan was elected president and one of Bruce's most powerful shows) and the three Nassau shows to close out 1980 (12/28, 12/29, and the infamous New Year's Eve show) have great soundboard qualities (for the time). He definitely did a lot of recording back then as there is a wealth of material from those two shows on "Live/1975-85." I would love for Bruce to do what PJ has started to do and open his vault. He would make a killing if he did that. I'm looking forward to seeing what he includes in The River box set.

  • Unfortunately, Bruce has never released anything official from the Darkness or River tours beyond the AZ show from the Darkness box set and the few edited (although great) cuts from Live 75-85.

The best boots from the 78 tour can be found here, but they are all recordings... I think the Crystal Cat recording of the Winterland bootleg and the Passaic shows were some of the best (and should have plenty of seeders). Don't quote me on that, though... but the Crystal Cat (a legendary bootlegger of shows) boots were some of the best.

here's the link to Jungleland, the greatest source of Springsteen bootlegs and bootleg artwork I've I've seen:

There is a video boot (the dawn of the videotape age, is my guess) from one or both of the Passaic 1978 shows that is amazing. The video is B/W but the sound and the rawness just presents such a nostalgic feeling that you'll be gripped to the boot for the duration... Backstreets with the 1978 interludes from both Winterland (no known video) and Passaic is worth the trouble of grabbing the torrent.

Listening to the first Nassau show of 1980. These 3 shows to close out 1980 are incredible to listen to.

  • Thanks for sharing... I preordered the vinyl and cd. I know there's some leaks out there but I'm trying to resist.

One thing always rings true with ME, at least... Bruce always sounds better live than in the studio.

I almost never listen to his studio albums more than several times, other than Born To Run, because the tracks always play soooo much better live. Darkness is by far my favorite album but it is so much better live that I have a hard time turning to the studio recording when there's so many boots out there, and even the shitty boots are great by comparison... and thats just a testament to the Boss' live prowess. :D

I'm dying for US dates, but Bruce, if you could hold off for a few months, like say April or so to announce them, that'll be work for me.

    13 days for "High Hopes"!

Dude, if that is true, I will want to make that trip so bad. PJ and Bruce doing a show together or PJ opening for Bruce? That may be the best show I will ever attend.

  • Damn...

I broke down and listened once to each song.

Love the new/improved studios of American Skin and Tom Joad

    Really liked Harry's Place

Down in the Hole is a lot like a cross between I'm on Fire and something Bruce has never done... lol -- does that make sense?

I'm not a huge fan of twangy-voiced Bruce but I also know enough to know that everything translates better live when it comes to Bruce.

This much is for sure -- the Boss reinvents himself yet again. Lotsa new tools used in this production. I'm sure it'll wear well on me like Wrecking Ball did...

    :)
