  • really, really loving the bootlegs. that site is awesome, go so many friends into it now, too.

i wish gord still ranted on stage, those early shows i saw with him in the late 90's were so great. i saw an interview with him about his ranting, he said he's changed from ranting to body movements, beacause they can say so much more than he can put into words.

He's actually gotten more hyper on stage in terms of movement. The last two times I saw the Hip (Seattle last summer and Virgin Fest in Calgary), he was entertaining as hell. Lots of leaping, running, spasmodic dancing, gyrating, invisible dogs nipping at his pantleg, and various other forms of craziness. I still think he's the best frontman in rock. He still rants a bit during certain songs, just not as much as he used to. I was watching a recent Youtube clip from 2007 where Gord goes off on this amazing rant during Grace, Too about "Prime Minister Bush" and Canada's involvement in Afghanistan, talking from the point of view of a young soldier saying "I told them I was afraid of the dark and they still sent me over. I told them I'd never fired a gun in my life, and they still sent me over." It was riveting stuff. I'd post the link, but it appears Youtube has taken it down. I wish i could find it.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Haha, yea I saw that. The guy sounds like a real douchebag. Too bad he's a Hip fan. There's no way that reference could come from anywhere else.

And I couldn't agree more regarding Gord's Woodstock performance. He was amazing that day. I remember some friends and I paid for the pay-per-view feed just to watch the Hip's set. They kicked so much ass and made most of the other bands on the bill look like amateurs. It was fantastic. The gigantic sea of Canadian flags was pretty cool too.

Here's a cool little clip of Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla chatting about the Hip at the Pemberton Festival:

It's always interesting hearing other bands talk about the Hip. Reminds me of back in the early 90s when Gord S. and Johnny did a radio interview in Seattle and the DJ mentioned that Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament had called in asking for tickets to their show. Then he told them that Bridget Fonda had also phoned in for tickets, to which Johnny replies: "Bridget Fonda, eh. I think we can work that out."

  • I'm just starting to discover Gord's greatness.

My band is covering 'Poets' on the 3rd, should be fun!
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

Um, everything? :) Seriously, though, my favourites are, in no particular order:

    - Day For Night
    - Road Apples
    - World Container
    - In Between Evolution

I don't know, though, they are amazing but their sounds can vary so much even within an album... Maybe start with Live Between Us, and see what you like? It was recorded in 1997, so it doesn't have anything from Phantom Power on... They're such an amazing live band, though, and if nothing else it's worth it for the version of "Nautical Disaster".

Hope in all my indecisive verbal diarrhea some help was given. ;)

phantom power is the album that got me hooked on them. it's one of their least idiosyncratic albums i think. but day for night is excellent. i'd start with one of those two.

    You can download it here:

Once you enter the site, click on "compilations" and download the one called "Roxy & Elsewhere". I believe it's track #11. The song is called Highway Girl.

Those are all great suggestions. I'd also recommend starting out with their double-disc greatest hits album "Yer Favourites". It's a great cross section of their entire career so far and it'll give you a good indication of what they're all about. I've said it before and I'll say it again: these guys are the best rock n' roll band in the world, and once you're hooked, you'll be hooked for life. Their live show is highly addictive.

    Happy listening!

I love the outdoor festival gigs. When I was at the Sasquatch Fest in '06, my sister and I were standing beside this girl who had never heard of them, and before they went on stage she asked us what they sound like. My sister called them "art rock", which is a pretty accurate description of them. I described them as a combination of poetry and kick-you-in-the-nuts rock n' roll. Once the boys hit the stage and launched into Grace Too, this girl was hooked. You could tell by the huge smile on her face as Gord danced and ranted up a storm. They went on stage right after the craziest hail storm anyone had ever seen. It halted the proceedings for about an hour and they had to shovel all the snow off the stage before the Hip could go on. After their set she asked me what albums she should start with and immediately made a b-line for the CD tent. There's something very satisfying about turning someone onto a band that you really love.

Here's the intro to Grace, Too from Sasquatch:

On other forums, I've become known as The Tragically Hip Fan - being mostly American and Australian they don't really know the Hip... So people come to me to get suggestions on what to listen to, and I've actually sent two CDs of mixed Hip tunes to one girl who showed interest... :) Glad to see I'm not alone!
