I just take issue with folks confusing the issue and claiming they haven't played Seattle to equate that they haven't played our region. They have played our region. The Gorge is our in our region. It is not as though they (or anyone) plays The Gorge for the residents of Quincy and George. They play there for the residents in the Puget Sound.

I totally agree with you. I was just initially responding to the OP who said was wondering why they don't play Seattle, and then responded to some guy in NY who thinks Gorge = Seattle. The Gorge is definitely a NW show, and if PJ plays there, I'll be there every time.

Is Vancouver considered a Seattle show then? Its closer fo me than the Gorge. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE THE GORGE. But it is far from a Seattle show. I dislike Key Arena, and would much rather see them at the Gorge than the Key. Why not a couple nights at the Paramount or Moore, the Everett Event Center, or something along those lines? I would also think that the PJ Gorge shows are well attended from all over the US, not 90% from the PNW. Portland is in the same boat as Seattle also.
Well yeah, Portland is in the Pacific Northwest as is Vancouver, BC. I consider both cities in my backyard. Again, get away from the "Seattle show" mentality. We are in a region called the Puget Sound. And that region is in a larger region called the Pacific Northwest. Way more to this area than just the city of Seattle.

On The Key Arena - I don't get the all of a sudden hatred for the venue. I have seen umpteen concerts and sporting events there and see nothing wrong with it. The sound is as good as it gets in any indoor arena anywhere in the country. And the place holds 20-30 thousand fans. What is wrong with The Key? PJ has played some really spectacular shows there over the years.

Paramount, Moore, Showbox - all great venues, but too small for a full scale show. If they want to pack in as may fans as they can, the arena or amphitheater shows are the way to go. All depends on what type of tour/show the band would be looking to do.

I noticed you mention the Everett Event Center, that isn't Seattle. Why is that ok with you being it isn't in Seattle and wouldn't count as a Seattle show? Would you also include the Tacoma Event Center? My point being, there are many terrific music venues around the region, and just because a show is not played in the city of Seattle, does not mean we as a region have been skipped.

And yea, being The Gorge is world renowned, folks travel from all around the globe to attend shows there, but it is not as though bands play there for the whole world, they play there for the residents of the Puget Sound. Don't hate us because we have one of the most beautiful venues in the lower 48. ;)

So, can I explain the lack of Seattle shows, sure. They have chosen a different location in our region to play the last few times. There is more to this part of the world than the city of Seattle.

And some of the people in this thread who blindly only count shows in the city of Seattle as local shows are starting to remind me of NY folks who act as though the world is coming to an end when PJ only plays in NJ on a tour. Save it.

I take it I am the guy from NY who thinks Gorge = Seattle show. If you told me I have a choice between seeing PJ at whatever arena or the gorge, I would take the gorge everytime. In fact I would be much happier if that was the case.

If they were to play 2 nights in Seattle then 2 nights at the gorge right after that, then you could argue that PJ doenst count the gorge as thier Seattle stop. But they wont because most bands consider shows at the gorge seattle shows.

they chose to play the much better and way more celebrated venue in our area, The Gorge.

Thats like, your opinion man. I think the gorge sucks, there I said it. It sucks for me and everyone else that lives in the Portland area because its a 5+ hour drive in the middle of nowhere. They also open the doors way to early and if you want a poster you have to sit there in the heat like a doofus. I know the scenery is nice, but if I want nice scenery I'll just go camping thank you very much. Also, the security totally blows, the rows are all retarded and its a pain in the ass to get out of, and theres no decent places to stay in the area. A show in Seattle proper means a 2.5 hour drive for me and staying in my favorite hotel of all-time.

Also, theres no fucking good reason they can't play the key. Almost every fucking comparable act has played there. Other places they could play: Wamu theater, benaroya (again), showbox, memorial stadium, marymoore park, white river amphitheater, memorial colesium, clark county amphitheater, crystal ballroom, roseland theater, elsinoire theater, hell any venue in Eugene and the list goes on. I just hope that when the NW gets another show its not at the gorge.

Fair enough about the Gorge. :D

And I agree, I would love to see PJ play anywhere from Eugene, OR to Vancouver, BC.

but Vancouver is to far away to see them, or a special Ed show? I believe the question is "Lack of Seattle shows", not lack of Gorge shows isn't it?

Quoted for truth. There is a reason they don't play the Key, but that seems to be a mystery. Every other big name manages to play the key. And PJ are local, so logistically it should be easier for them than for most other bands.

I would choose the Gorge over the Key anyday. That being said, I'll take any PJ show that comes my way, be it at the Gorge, White River, Everett Events Center, the Key, Qwest Field, and any of the small clubs around downtown Seattle. Beggars can't be choosers...

It doesn't have to be 'instead'. You want to make it seem like they are mutually exclusive for some reason. Bands have played both. The Police are an example. Saw them at the Key last year. Will see them at The Gorge this summer. Dave Matthews just played the Key in April with Tim Reynolds. His band will be at The Gorge this summer. 2 examples just this year. Plus with festivals, lots of other "Seattle" bands will be playing both the Gorge and Seattle, although they're smaller than PJ. The point is, PJ could play Seattle if they want to. The point is, as you said above, they chose not to. The OP was simply asking why they chose not to. That's what we're discussing.

if PJ tours during the summer they will play the gorge. If it is winter they will play the Key. They wont play Key in the summer when the beautiful gorge is available.

They have chosen to play the gorge the past two tours. No indication of what they might do next time. I seem to remember Ed saying that they might play somewhere else that final gorge show.

The Gorge isnt seattle. And those two secret shows dont count either. Benefits dont count either.

These guys defined seattle. They made it cool. They made little kids like me during the hey day of grunge dream of running away and moving to seattle.

So why do they refuse to play Seattle proper?

Didn't they get hassled the last time they played the Key, and stuff? Something about security? Ed mentions it on one of the boots. "When will music get some fucking respect in this town."

On a broader note, it appears Ed was fed up with the city of Seattle and its negative effect on the music scene even then. Maybe this is his grand, "fuck you."

Like others, I've read how the city of Seattle has done its best to squash the music scene of late ... maybe the boys just got sick of it, and this is their way of protesting.

The last time they played the Key on their own was in December of 2002 and the shows went off without a hitch (it was all for charity). They have always had great shows at the Key.

Again, no one has been able to tell me from experience how the Key sucks any worse than any other arena in the country. I think it is a fine arena, great for concerts and sporting events.
