Reznor quote from 1994...

I have a feeling Trent Reznor is not happy about the Hurt cover by eddie vedder. He is not a big Pearl Jam fan. At least he wasn't back in 1994:

snippet from an interview:

L: Selling lots of records isn't such a bad thing...

T: The problem is, if I would have made a record and set down and thought O.K. A lot of people liked `Head Like A Hole' yeah, maybe I'll write a song that sounds just like it. Okay, grunge is in maybe I'll grow a goatee. Yeah, that might be cool. But I need a big techno edge, `cause that's really popular right now so I'll have Moby remix it. and then I sold a shitload of records, I'd feel on thin ice. I'd never do that in the first place, but if I did, I'd feel uneasy because I basically sold out.

L: But don't you have a responsibility to yourself as a musician, let alone to your fans?

T: Absolutely I do. I'm saying if I did that I'd feel shitty about selling a lot of records. But I've made the records I've wanted to make. And if a lot of people want to buy them, then who am I to say they're not cool enough to buy my records. You're a nerd. You're from Pennsylvania, you can't buy this. I grew up there! I was one of those guys who wasn't cool enough. It's music. If you don't like it, the Pearl Jam record is right there on the shelf. Buy it! It's for people like you.

L: What do you listen to?

T: Pearl Jam.

L: Alright.

T: I fucking hate Pearl Jam.

L: O.K.

good thing people don't change or mature over time...

that way we can judge them for something they said 15 years ago ;)

  • Am I out of the loop? Where did the hurt cover come from? I youtube'd it and there was a video added 22 hours ago, but when I clicked it it said "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Pearl Jam Ten Club"
  • lol, that's hilarious. i'd love to hear the audio to that.

  • Yeah...Trent's had a whole whack of therapy and some rehab since 1994...He's probably not anywhere near as angry as he used to be... Ed was an angry "I hate everything" kinda guy in 1994 as well...

Interesting snippet of interview...not really unexpected...Trent was probably mad because he thought he had the angry at the parents tortured soul mad at the world image all to himself, but he realized he did not...

I guess they both grew up as they left their 20's and 30's behind...fancy that....

totally agree. But I remember reading a recent article somewhere where he bad mouthed the band again! He said something to the effect that he always respected nirvana but thought pearl jam was joke/not original....trying to find that article.

Still haven't heard Ed's version of hurt...

  • The title to this post is extremely misleading. There is nothing to back it up. You have posted an article from 1994 that has a few quotes from Trent about Pearl Jam. How does this equate to him being unhappy about EV covering a song of his in 2008?

dig up something that is 14 years old!!!

i think both bands would have grown up a lot musically and mentally.

Ed and Trent are both musical talents and i am sure have a great respect for each other. By covering Hurt, and saying what he says before he sings the song, i think he shows that!

That is a misleading and not honest thread title. It must suck to be big, when people are putting words in your mouth that you didn't say. The man hasn't said a word publicly about the Hurt cover. They are down in South America at this moment. I like Pearl Jam and I like NIN, and sure a bunch of them were angry young men in 1994, the year my now 14 1/2 year old daughter was BORN. Why stir up unnecessary trouble? I'd bet it is more likely than not, that members of Pearl Jam, and members of NIN had some good interaction at Bridge School 06, as they were all there for charity.

Well, I've got a photo of Stone and Jeff watching Trent Reznor at Bridge 2006 - they were at the side of the stage....which is where Jeff and Dave Matthews stood to watch DCFC... so I would imagine there's a mutual respect...

  • this argument is irrelevant not only because it was 14 years ago when he said it, but was probably making a generalization about pearl jam because grunge was the hot thing back in 94 and pearl jam happened to be one of the popular bands. if kurt wasn't on a path to destruction or possibly already dead by the time this interview came out, then he probably would have replaced pearl jam with nirvana.

I don't know what he would have to pissed about in the first place (though I REALLY doubt he is). First of all, I think, at the very least, he would be flattered that two extremely talented, highly respected and even legendary musicians (Vedder and Cash) found his song worth covering. Second of all, he is always going to be credited as the original writer in the first place! It's not as if Ed covered the song and suddenly it's "his."

um....I'm sure there are a lot of people that consider NIN to be one of music's all time greats.

I also remember Trent mocking Ed around that time (think it was in Rolling Stone)... something about his lyrics not being that personal, saying he was not the epitome of honesty he portrays himself as....
I'm a fan of pretty much everything done by both PJ and NIN, I couldn't care less what they think of each other. Even if they do/did hate each other, who are we to guess why?
I would be interested to hear Trent's reaction tho, this thread was disappointing.

    hmmm...probably stretching it a little..."all time greats"??
