Trade for my Townshend SG... Any ideas?

I am considering (as always) trading for some different gear.

Right now I have a Gibson Townshend Sig SG. The P-90 model with the stop tail and the large pickguard... you all know this one... the "Ed from the 2003 tour guitar"

Anyways, I am considering selling or trading this for something different/new to me...

Any ideas? What is the resale on one of these? They are discontinued, but I don't know the market...

I currently have a Tele and this SG... my amp is a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia with a Z-best 212...

What do you think?

I know... I was waiting for you and Pac79 to yell at me again...

Honestly, I do think the guitar is great, but I always like to try different things to get a different tone or stir up my playing a bit...

I am really enjoying my tele right now...

So, I am looking at strat style guitars (never had one of those) maybe a G&L Comanche...

The SG is very dark, especially with my current amp/cab setup.

    Just looking at my options.

Yeah, I think you're fucking insane. One of gibsons best creations.

Resale, Around a grand or so probably $1100 is not a bad price.

Ok, so it's too dark, what are you thinking about going with? Some kind of Ash ASAT or Tele?
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

No I am not sure I want to let it go... It is a great guitar...

I paid $1000 cash for it new... but I figured it would be around the same...

If someone offered me $1100 it would be hard for me to turn them down...

Then again, it would be hard for me to let the guitar go...

So, that's why trading is great... if someone else has something to offer... two sides benefit.

I have an ash tele... I built it from select parts... it is my signature model... :)

I am definitely insane... no question there.

It's not "too" dark either... with other amps it sounds just right... just not with the current setup...

I think a semi hollow of some kind would be nice too... that or, a strat type guitar.

Yeah, I still think you're nuts. why not just try and find another amp to go with the SG?

I just adore the Townsend SG's.

But hell an ASAT hollowbody with the wide single coils would be cool. or if you can find an old thinline. That'd probably be perfect.

part of my musical process is trying new things out... it never fails for a new piece of equipment to really motivate/inspire something creative and musically powerful from my playing...

I don't believe that one setup is going to be perfect, but every person probably has a "beste possible guitar" for their style of play...

That's all I am looking for...

indeed. I agree. Definately check out the ASAT semi hollow classic. right up your alley.

I did try out a Dr. Z Maz 18 112 combo... it was definitely more bright... but I missed having the 212 setup... it moves more air... plus it was expensive ($1550) I really like the touch sensitivity of the Ghia and how simple the layout is...

I am not sure what other amps might work in the $1200 price range... You can't beat the reliability of a handmade amplifier either... plus it has a lifetime warranty.

Yeah, I've corresponded with Z personally. That's huge.

I bet an SRZ 65 would work or a KT-45 something more woolly you know.

But screw it. You've sold lots of guitars. The thing you are likeing right now is the amp so no sense really messing with that. You can always find another Townsend. It never hurts to shop around.

I don't mean to get you down... sorry man...

The Ghia gets pretty woolly when you crank it up...

I actually think some humbuckers might give a really smooth, liquidy lead tone...

The tele is just downright nasty... and the amp is so responsive... it really reacts to your volume control and pick attack...

the Strat is a used '57 reissue... real nice strat... sounds like a strat.

The 335 is my old guitar I sold to the shop when I was not in a band and not in need of a high end guitar... it is also a great player... nice feel too.

Indeed. I just thought maybe an ASAT hollowbody would be more comfy than the 335. The Seth Lover in the neck is essentially the same P/U as the 57 classics. I wonder what a gretsch would sound like.

Well, I tried a Gretsch, a 6120 Nashville this weekend... it sounded great actually, but I disliked the feel of the gretsch... too plasticy... maybe it needed to be broken in... but I felt separate from the amp... it was weird... but it did sound pretty nice...

honestly a lot like Townshend on Who's Next LP... that big tone with not much sustain... it was cool...

unfortunately a good gretsch runs closer to $2,000 than $1,000.

yeah I'm sticking to the original Bluesboy/thinline semi hollowbody plan.

you may check out those Schecter hollowbodies if you make it to a guitar shop. I doubt you'll like the feel or the look but it's worth a shot.

There's always the 335 again too.

Carvin has a cool little hollowbody too.

And of course there is the incomprable (but probably not your style) PRS Hollowbody 2 or spruce.

    however nowhere near a grand.

  • If you want a great amp with some balls, check out

    http://www.aikenamps.com

The Tomcat is killer. The 18 watt Intruder is also great.

Do a search on google for "The Gear Page". When you get to the gear page do a search for Tomcat or Intruder. You won't be disappointed with either.

If it's a dark guitar, try a brighter amp. I own a 68 White SG special and a 02 Townshend SG. I have to sell one or the other and I'm selling the Townshend only because the 68 will be worth more money in the long run. The Townshend plays better and sounds better by a long shot.
    Makes much more sense

Um why not keep it and just buy a nice used Fender strat for like $500?

yeah Aiken's are nice. His Dr. Z is similar in circutry with two less EL-84's I believe the Perscription is the 4 El-84 version.

I have played an Aiken... nice stuff. I really love the simplicity of my current amp...

We audtioned new bass players last night... and it was so easy for me to adjust to the new pocket for my rhythm guitar tones... and I just set the amp volume and tone... and used my volume knobs and pup selector switch to change lead rhythm... really sounded great...

I will let you guess what guitar I was using... it really is a great guitar...

But, now my guitar player told me about a hole in the wall shop in town with "60s Gibson hollowbodies for $1,000." Odds are they are ES-125s are something similar... but if they are 335s or even Epi Casinos, actual 60s models, I will be forced to scrap the money together...

supposedly they have old Fenders on hand as well...

I might have a new favorite shop... the tech there used to roadie for Clapton alledgedly...

They are definately 125's. Probably 64's I see quite a few of those. Most go for around $1250 still cool and very nice but chances are they need a little TLC to get great.

The last Gibson Casino I saw (they have one here at GC atl I can't think of the model number) was like $2800 somthing I think.

The older 335's are around $3700 I think.

The Epi Casinos are up there too because of the damn beatles fame.

Man I'd love to have an old 335 with an ebony fingerboard.

My friend from home and I have similar discussions, pretty much daily... it would be nice to be able to get whatever gear we wanted, when we wanted...

    Someday... maybe.

I played my guitar players strat last night... it does sound pretty good with the Ghia...

the strat is on my list...

It seems that, yet again the GAS has been averted... unless of course there are some nice vintage items at this shop today... then I will have to reevaluate.

The strat would be cool. You could probably trade even too for an American Deluxe or one of those American Series 50th anniversaries.

    Great...

I just have never been a strat guy...

I found the strat handled more gain on the Ghia... but I didn't like the tone as much...

The Townshend sounds a bit stratty... especially on the middle position, which I use quite a bit for rhythm work. It has some quack.

You can hear it on that guitar, for example, at the beginning of Love Boat Captain, when Ed first strums the chords...

it's a bit stratty... to my ears.
