Don't even know what it's called... Asus or something? Love it.

    Dear me, that's Dsus2.
My favourite for character are major 7th's, like the Fmaj7/Cmaj7 progression in JJ Cale's "Magnolia".

For guts, a slammin' A power chord pops up in so much White Stripes, Gunners, and esp the end of the phrase in Black Dog, so it definitely just some crunch time around here !!!!!

MInd you, you can just sit andd jam on the Jimmy chord for a ridiculous amount of time and have it still sound suspiciously like actual music. Hendrix did that a bit !!
    Music is not a competetion.

Even though the E power chord is my favorite, I tend to use that form of a D a lot. I like to do lots of open chords over bar chords.

You'd probably be most comfortable with D7#9 (with 3rd but no 5th)
    Funny but AKA - (F6 b9 no 3rd) or (F#Maj7 b5 +5) or (Cadd9 b5 sus4)

I like the sound of a basic E chord. Nothing fancy.

    E, B, F#, G, B, F#

That could be a few chords.

It could be a Bsus4 with a flattened 6th which to me seems like the most likely candidate.

    E – B – F# - G – B – F#

    E-Minor-add9

    G-Major-13

These two chord descriptions are a bit easier to digest.

Awesome, thanks. I got a merit on Grade 5 theory but I'm too lazy to work these things out.

Ian how did you come to know so much about music, did you study music theory since you were a little kid?

I should have taken band or something in junior high... here I am a sophomore in college mucking about on my guitar and the only music theory I know is my major chords, minor chords, basic scales, some pentatonic scales.

No, not "since I was a little kid".
I actually started playing guitar very late (17), but didn't take it seriously.
Then at age 20 I ended up getting a FULL Music Scholarship, so I had to take it seriously (I'm now 33 - so 13 years).
I ended up getting a Music Degree (Jazz Guitar and Classical Guitar Studies - Minor in Guitar Performance).
I'm a guitar instructor - I focus on a practical approach to understanding the instrument (meaning a big emphasis on Music Theory, NOT songs)
I'm also a session artist for Sony® (among others), so I need to know and understand music and music theory to play what's handed to me.
I've been fortunate enough to play/record with many bands/people over the past years.
This is all I do - I make music for a living -- Hope this clears things up for you :)
If you check out my MySpace site you can hear a couple things I've recorded, and read a bit more about me and what I do:
