I’m not a huge fans of festivals anymore but I love New Orleans and I’ve always wanted to check out jazz fest.  Anyone have tips on how to experience it? Are the VIP packages worth it?  I’d love to not have to fight all day for a decent view of the stage.

I went to JF long before those stupid VIP packages came out. If you've got the$ good for you but not necessary.
The point of JF is to experience everything as a local and try all the food!!
Seeing performers at the Fais DoDo and Congo Square stages is always fun and will make you feel local. The Gospel Tent is a must do. Go see the Mardi Gras Indians...
The Acura stage is a cluster f**k, and I've usually hated getting stuck with 10k people and will stay on fringes... just not impt to be closer.

If you're planning to hang out all day at Acura Stage just to see PJ you'll be missing out on so much that makes JF special. The stage is far away no matter what and there are screens...

Go to any PJ show like you would Jazz Fest: go for the local flavor and fare, hang out, relax and never, under any circumstances, stand in line just to stand closer.  Your life will not be drastically altered by a tambourine Eddie Vedder touched.

PJ in the daylight with a drink in hand and zero fucks about being close?  Amazing.  See yall there :)

Yes... zero fucks about being close is the point. Go get Crawfish Monica and just blend in toward the back... I remember the fest with Elton John it was packed all the way back to racetrack . Same with Springsteen

Thank you for all the advice about JF, we are going for first time too and weren’t sure if we should treat it like a more fun Lolla!
