Always wanted to get on the rail. Anyone have any insight on how soon you have to get in line? Does the venue announce where the GA entrance is ahead of time?

I would say to get there early the day before. There may be a few people who will start lining up two days early - but if you get there early the day before you have a decent shot at rail. When you get there look for the tents. That will be where the GA line is.
You speaking from experience? A day before really necessary?
Yes, I am speaking from experience. I have been on the rail many times and have had to camp out at least one night. And if the band plays two nights in one city, many people will leave the first show and go right to the GA line for the second show. For example, for Philly2, I camped out 2 nights for rail. But it is really fun. Just bring a tent and make friends. I always have a good time. However, if you get in line early the day of the show, you could easily get in the second or third row - it is just rail that is more difficult. Or if you get lucky you could get the very sides of the rail without camping out - but that is a risk.
