Gwar at the limelight nyc (old church venue). Just so perfectly wrong.
Motorhead, judas priest and Alice Cooper. Scalped killer floor seats before the show. Me and my bud just kept walking closer to the stage. Mind blown. Wish I saw JP more than once.

Just a start, but definitely some fantastic no stress inexpensive shows. Was lucky to have grown up during such great accessible music
Merkin Baller and I have been following each other around for 25 years and had no idea. Ditto the TCV and Post Pop Depression shows. A few that come to mind....
Tool @ Hammerstein Ballroom Living Colour @ Johnny D's in Somerville Roger Waters w/ My Morning Jacket @ Newport Folk Fest Pearl Jam @ Nassau Coliseum - truly the weirdest vibes ever Velvet Revolver @ Avalon 1st One Big Holiday System/Incubus/Mr. Bungle @ Lupo's David Gilmour @ Radio City
You jogged my memory about the first Mr Bungle show I saw in '95 (Avalon, again)... that one I'm particularly grateful I went to... none of my friends wanted to go, but I didn't let that deter me.... going alone that night opened the door to so many other fantastic shows that I might not have gone to otherwise if I wasn't comfortable flying solo... trying for single tickets landed me in the 2nd row at the Orpheum for Primus when they played Sailing the Seas of Cheese & in the 1st ten rows for some other great acts including Tool & APC.
While on the subject of A Perfect Circle, IIRC they kicked off their first headlining tour at Avalon in 2000, another concert I'm grateful I was able to see.
It's no small coincidence that some of my favorite shows were at Avalon, that place was the shit. I was heartbroken when they tore that & Axis down to build the HOB.
Oh man yeah those old APC shows. I get chills thinking about them. The first one I saw was when they opened for NIN in Hartford before the album came out. That Avalon show with Diary of a Lovesong was insane.
It really was... then they came back around & played Brandeis in Waltham of all places. At that show they covered Ashes to Ashes by Bowie... one of the greatest covers I've seen in my life. That original lineup was easily their best. (Paz in her miniskirts helped exponentially 😍)
Re: Snocore at Lupo’s… was that at the old Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, or at the Strand Theater that Lupo’s eventually took over? Both are nice small venues, but Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel was significantly smaller.
Old Lupo's. I also saw Creed and Kid Rock there. Heady times around Y2K
Daaaaaaaaaamn, that place was smaller than the Paradise. I saw Bouncing Souls, Jerry Cantrell & Dave Navarro there... SnoCore must have been mental.
SOAD was f'ing fire on that tour, I'm so glad I saw them that early on.

A couple more popped into mind... Rage & Wu Tang in Mansfield 1997. Zack broke his foot the night before in NY, and he was late getting up there... Wu played an extended set & Rage took the stage around 11 (& got fined up the ass for playing past curfew IIRC). That was the only time I saw either of them.
There was also a 2 night stand for Radiohead at the Boston Garden in 2018 - I somehow scored GA for both nights. They played 25 songs each night and only repeated 5... that 2 night stand was a religious experience. (I had only seen them once before in 2000 or 2001 on the Kid A tour)

Complete wow! Especially that city gardens show. SG was basically a no name and supporting louder than love. Hot (yes you know he was) screaming topless CC climbed a beam over my head and kicked in the ceiling with his Dr m's. Then fell to the floor. Got lucky to meet him later on in life and talked about that show. Genuinely nice person. rip If I could only go back

Amazing... & was that FNM's first run w/ Patton? That must have been f'ing wild.
I guess so. Supporting the real thing. Killer killer killer. Was honestly going for VoiVod. Friend turned me on to them. They were heading deeper into the progmetal. We were running late and I told my bud I don't care if we miss fnm. He was like noooo! And we made it on time. A few teenage dudes lost and finding out way! Ahh memories. you can find fnm show at city gardens a few months prior to this tour on youtube.

According to the FNM biography, Bordin & Gould jammed w/ Cornell as a potential front man for FNM before Patton joined; things worked out for the best for each band, but still interesting to hear that happened.
There are quite a few, will add as I think of more:
Radiohead in 1997 on the OK Computer tour Edgefest 1997 - Tea Party, I Mother Earth, and Our Lady Peace. (CanCon awesomeness, I still get shivers thinking of the Tea Party playing at dusk). Motorhead 2000 Fugazi 2001 REM 2004 Tragically Hip - every time, including the last tour. (Miss this band so much, summer doesn't seem the same without a Hip tour). Slipknot 1999 (opening for Coal Chamber, tore the roof off the place) Tom Petty 2008 David Crosby 2019

There have been so many! I'll go with my top six here (and then later maybe wish I had including some others, lol):
Pearl Jam was a huge one for me, for sure. I am forever grateful for former poster here, DS, who arranged to get me a ticket to see the band in MIssoula in 2012. That was a classic Pearl Jam show and one of my top favorites, others being...
1968, WInterland, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. An unforgettable concert experience.
Also unforgettable, 1968, San Jose Civic Auditorium, The Who and Blue Cheer. That one all started when a friend in high school came up to me and said, "Hey Brian, guess Who is coming to do a concert in San Jose?" Wow!
1970, The Planetarium in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Sun Ra and Arkestra. An out-of-this-world experience!
1982, San Francisco Civic Auditorium, The Clash and the English Beat. Joe Strummer was in fine fiery form!
1983, S.F. Civic, U2 and The Alarm, the War Tour. Incredible!
Very envious of your Clash show. I don't know why I never made it to one of their shows.
It was an amazing show. One thing happened at that show that I probably didn't fully understand at the time. About half way through the show, Joe Strummer walked up to the mic and mumbled something that wasn't clear and then, shoving his middle finger in the air, he screamed "Fuck you all!" The crowd response, figuring this was just a really cool Joe punk rock thing, was to go nuts, cheering and hollering for joy, followed by Strummer slamming into the next number with an intense vengeance.
In retrospect, have read up a lot more about Strummer and the band, this was around the time that Joe was beginning to feel disillusioned with how punk was being viewed and perceived by the then widening acceptance and adoption by many of punk rock. Strummer was adamant about his political and social views and wanted his music to reflect his feelings and beliefs. He felt that, by then, most audience members viewed punk as a fashion statement or something trendy, and the last thing he wanted was to be all about something merely trendy. Quite interesting music history in retrospect.
Yeah. Joe did have a lot of struggles with the effects of fame and popularity. At the same time they did things like play that residency in NY and released "Rock the Casbah". Though that was probably more Mick. If I were in his position I would have gone through the same conundrum of wanting as many people to hear my message, but at the same time questioning myself if I sold out. I'd have lost my mind. Fame can seem great, but it is also a pathway to anxiety and depression. I'm sure we can all name so many artists who have succumbed to that avalanche of pressure.
Good points! Being in the bright spot light like that does not sound like fun.
Somewhere in his recent memoir, singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Wynn (of The Dream Syndicate) talks about how he is just fine with being a lesser known artist, despite having made a number of solo albums, forming a number of bands, working with well know people from bands like Led Zeppelin and R.E.M., and releasing close to 50 albums. Probably (besides not needing the income but still love playing) is why Mike Mills and Peter Buck of R.E.M. are doing more low profile gigs these days.

Near the top for me would be....2017, Tom Petty w/ Chris Stapleton as the opener at Wrigley Field. I had a pair of fan club tickets on the outfield which had to be picked up at Will Call using my ID. Life got busy and I wasn't going to be able to make the trip (I live a few states away). I was bummed that a) I was going to miss a mountaintop show and b) due to the method of p/u the tickets were un-useable by anyone else. Day before the show I had a change in heart and figured work, etc would wait, TP was not to be missed. I ring a buddy and lay out the plan, "Spontaneous adventure opportunity: I pick you up in three hours, we catch a plane to Chicago, and tomorrow night go see Tom Petty play Wrigley Field." Him: "Give me a few minutes and let me check with my wife." He calls back in a few minutes and says "Let's go!" (side note: he earned a permanent top spot as a go-to wing man for shows). The show was incredible, one of the highlights being a stadium fun of fans, enormous smiles plastered on each and every face, singing aloud in unison and amidst a drizzling rain to Free Fallin'. Fast forward a few months and Tom was gone. I'm forever grateful for getting to be at that show.

Life is too short. Sometimes the crazy spur of the moment adventures are the best. I wish I saw Petty. Did get to see Stapleton on the rail, and it was truly memorable. Your show must have been amazing.
1991- Hollywood Palladium, California with Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains -RIP Magazine Show Oct. 6th 1992- Lollapalooza, Irvine, California Nothing since then. I suck. 2016- Fenway Park, Boston - Both glorious nights 2022- Oakland Night 2 2024 Sacramento, CA
Soundgarden: PNE Forum Vancouver 1996 - A few months before they broke up. You could tell something was off with Ben Sheppard but the energy was off the charts. If I listen to live on I-5, the live album from that tour brings me right back to the show. One of my all time favourites.
OzzFest '99 Vancouver: The only time we got an Ozzfest in Vancouver. Black Sabbath, Slipknot, System of a Down, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Primus, Slayer, Deftones.. it was stacked!
Lollapalooza '92: Really the origin of me going to concerts. This started the journey, the Soundgarden show in '96 cemented it.
Foo Fighters: UBC Student Rec Centre in '97. Place held about 1000 people. They were electric and it was fun seeing them a bit earlier in their journey. It took them a while to get to big venue headlining status.
RHCP: Los Angeles - Dec 31, 1999 to Jan 1, 2000 - My Millennium show
Tom Petty & PJ at the Gorge in '05. We drive the gorge for PJ, back up to Vancouver for PJ, then right back down the Gorge for TP. Might be my most favourite back to back to back shows.
Another Roadside Attraction 1993: Not many shows happen on my Island, this was the first one of note. The Tragically Hip were and always will be awesome.
AC/DC Edmonton 2008 - A thunder and lightning storm blew over the stadium, they show continued. It pissed rain the entire show. There was lighting in all directions. It was fucking epic and awesome!
Bruce Springsteen: Vancouver 2012. I saw him in 08 and he was awesome, but I was hallucinating from bronchitus. The 2012 I was healthy, and he brought his A game. I think he's the only musician I consider on par with PJ in terms of how awesome the live show is.
U2 @ The Sphere - Awesome!!
Last four shows of the Binaural Tour. I was in univesity and we planned to see portland and both seattles. They cancelled portland and we moved the tickets to Boise. Then they reannounced Portland and we bought tickets through TM. Ended up going to those four shows. Was a helluva lot of fun, and the only time I've followed PJ to three different cities in a row. Boise was the best of the bunch, and I would of never gone there had they not cancelled and uncancelled portland.
Tragically Hip - Victoria 2016 - The first date of the final tour of the hip. No one knew what to expect given Gord's brain cancer diagnosis. The crowd stood and cheer at the top it's lungs for so long. I've never seen that kind of energy at a Victoria show before. That show was off the charts.
I could go on, but these are some highlights I would never want to trade for anything, some of my favourites out of the hundreds and hundreds of concerts I've gone too.

Those early Ozzfest lineups were nuts. 98, 99, 00.
I have told this story many times, but relevant to this thread:
Aug 8, 1994 Soundgarden at Winnipeg Arena. My boss at the time had a side business as an event caterer. He got the job for the SG show. He asked me if I wanted backstage passes. I was like WUT. Before the show we saw Chris lumbering by in the catering area, but he looked intense and not approachable, so we didn't bother him (big regret). After the show we go backstage again and see Matt. He's standing by an exit door. My boss insists we go talk to him. So we do. He's standing with the door slightly open, laughing. We walk up and ask him what's up, and he points to Ben running around the parking lot, drunk out of his mind, getting in the way of the roadies trying to reorganize the tour busses. They're honking at him and yelling at him to get out of the way. We talked to Matt for a good 20 minutes before we said our goodbyes. Super chill, no star struckness or anything. Just a normal guy talking to two other normal guys.
Core memory.

Temple Of The Dog, MSG, 2016. 5th row center. Upgraded my tickets from the back of the floor like an hour before the show started lol. My mom had passed away that June. At the Seattle shows, I got to tell Jeff what these shows, and the music, meant to my brother and I. Caught one of Matt's wristbands at the end.
The Smashing Pumpkins, August 2015, Foxwoods. Front-row center. First time I'd seen TSP w/Jimmy Chamberlin, a dream come true. Pre-show acoustic concert & Q/A, got to ask Billy a question, caught a pick from him. Manson opened the show. I caught a cup he was drinking out of. He cut his hand with a broken beer bottle, gave me a bloody high five, and spit on me at one point. He also let me sing into the microphone during "Rock Is Dead".
Metallica, May 2017, Nassau Coliseum. My 40th birthday, my first birthday without my mom, and my first time ever seeing Metallica. They played my favorite song of theirs, "Fade To Black". That night was the night that the second half of my life started in earnest.
The Strokes, May 2014, The Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY. Rail, in front of Albert, got his setlist. Top to bottom, maybe the best show I've ever been to, period.
