Anybody who hasn't realized, for 10 years, that this band DOES NOT LIKE TOURING?
Hasn't been paying attention.
They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't like it to some extent. Even if they were hurting for money, they could make it in a multitude of other ways if they really hated touring.
Ed has made multiple comments in 2023/24 alluding to how much they enjoy what they do
Wrigley 7/19/2013 Philadelphia 10/22/2013 Baltimore 10/27/2013 Hampton 4/18/2016 Ft. Worth 9/13/2023 Ft. Worth 9/15/2023 Wrigley 8/31/2024 Baltimore 9/12/2024 Fenway 9/15/2024
Let's not forget Covid scrapped a bunch of dates and yet unannounced dates. Still would have not been a huge number for a decade but has to be factored into the equation.
@curmudgeoness We don't have to worry about Eddie sitting around the hotel room in nothing but a dressing gown, waiting for his 2 onstage shirts he travels with to be laundered! I mean unless ya wanna...
I spy a box of Ed picks
I was just about to post exactly that I knew your eye would zoom exactly where mine did.

So cool. Been said before.. When I met him once he had a handful of picks to hand out. I wonder if he had that box with him and just scooped them out. No new ones for Ed this tour to see yet. Good times ❤️
I think they have been doing things at their own pace for some time. They could have retired 20 years ago. I highly doubt they tour to just keep the machine going. Spot on that they enjoy playing but not being on the road for too long, especially after Taylor Hawkins death in South America. I think the large festival and ball park paydays are also incentives for them. Hard to say no to millions of dollars for a days work.
I liked it. Was cool hearing Ed talk about the setlist like waves. Makes sense. Nothing we really didn't know before but very cool and humanizes them for a fanboy like me!
Yes, it was very well done. It was cool hearing him say how he didn't see daylight for a couple weeks with that record. Personally, when Dark Matter came out, I loved floating around on the lake listening to it in nature.
I also appreciate him expressing a lack of fear regarding his own death.
If you fear it how can you enjoy life? Funny EV and I are the same age he grew up in Evanston myself in Chicago, both love sports, wine and utterly worship The Who! Strange 🌎...My favorite part was Jeff describing listening to the MommaSon tape and after the second listen he was like yeah Stone, Mike you need to come over ASAP...can you imagine after thinking their shot was over w/ Andy dying and here was this voice from the Gods saying take II🍷
Great piece, my only quibble was the "Pearl Jam sued Ticketmaster" comment, which isn't exactly true.
What is truer?
They never directly sued TM, they filed a complaint with the Justice Department (who, iirc, was already looking into TM's monopolistic practices). That's how Stone and Jeff ended up testifying on Capitol Hill.

That's a beautiful perception. Thanks, V

I mean, it's CBS Sunday Morning. Expectations shouldn't have been too high. Pretty blah piece. I think if you're presenting a piece for the masses, it does an ok job reminding folks that they're still around. Honestly, a ton of CBS viewers probably haven't heard much since the mid-90's. I guess the dressing room footage was cool for us bigger fans, but the rest is stuff we've seen/heard before.
They did give the overview that they've been around for almost 35 years, they have their 12th album out, and they provided the origin story. I wish they would've mentioned more about their legacy (albums sold, R&R Hall of Fame induction), maybe make the argument that this is one of the biggest American rock bands of all time. It felt like it was just an interview with a band that's stayed together for a long time and "hey, you remember when they had that grudge against Ticketmaster back in the day?"

AGREED! they are a business first and foremost. They have to meet a certain revenue goal each year to draw salaries and pay their employees. whether its 20 shows at 200$ or 200 shows at 20$, they need to make budget.
As they've gotten older the have found a way to be more efficient, less shows at way higher prices, with high volume stadium shows sprinkled in (each stadium show equals about 3 arena shows).
Point is, they are going to play less shows at higher prices. We just have to accept it and enjoy concerts we are lucky enough to attend!
For the CBS piece, I was able to watch the 8 minute version when it came out. From the PJ email it mentions “full length” but I can’t access the content in Canada. Does the email link take you to the 8 min piece, or an extended interview like the one CBS did with REM (40+ min)?
Comments
I count about 76 from 2015 through this year's Ohana.
