eBay Buyers Beware!

There's a band signed item on eBay right now that looked authentic enough to me to justify getting it reviewed by PSA. It came back as likely not genuine.

Here's the auction link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/126448510857

And here's the opinion from PSA: https://www.psacard.com/quickopinion/viewopinion?id=JovbY5BIEX8A

If anyone is considering buying signed items on eBay, I am a big supporter of having PSA do an online signature review. It's $10 well spent and they give their opinion within 48 hours.

They have their team look at it and give their opinion. It isn't their full examination of it... they've said likely genuine on these quick opinions on items and then sent them back as not legit when customers send the same item in to get fully authenticated, and the opposite has happened also (Not me personally)...I wish they'd give more detail then just a one line opinion, but I guess for $10 that's all you get.

The signatures do look pretty good to me also, there are some awful PJ fakes on eBay but I was about 80% confident on this one. The Mike and Jeff signatures look just a bit off to me for some reason...but signing a CD cover doesn't seem very conducive to a nice clean signature. the EV signature does look like an older version of his signature. If this was say a 2024 concert poster I'd be leery of the EV signature but I've seen older ones that look like this from him.

There was a story few years ago on either 60 Minutes or HBO Real Sports about fake sports autographs.  To demonstrate how tough it is to know what is real and what’s fake they hired a college art student to practice a player’s autograph and then had her sign some photos and other merchandise.  The producers then had one of their staff take it to a sports card show where one of the major autograph authenticators had a booth set up and they were doing authentications right on the spot at the show.  All of the forged items passed inspection and were certified as genuine.  They put authentication holograms on the items and issued them the matching certificates for the forged items.  So even the experts have no idea for sure.  The only way to be sure is to get it in person.

I've never really understood the fascination with buying something autographed 'second hand'...I mean, If I want something autographed I want to obtain that autograph myself...that's half the fun.

I would never buy a signed item off ebay. That is not a smart move. 99% are fake. A fool and his money are soon parted.
Real ones are sold by the Vitalogy Foundation and usually cost big bucks.

I think every signed PJ piece I've ever bought has been from the band or advertised by the band.  Items elsewhere it can be too difficult sometimes.  Your real signature experts here I would trust tho -  Pacer,  Paul. Etc.  Those guys know 91 from 98 to this year or that year.

Even sports the only stuff I buy is straight from MLB.  Their program is the best.

Autopen is why you need the professionals and not just seasoned PJ merch guys. The autos look great but you're looking for autopen evidence beyond straight forgery. Someone posted one of those here a couple weeks ago - pretty tough to spot if you're not looking for it and educated.
