Used car prices are outrageous!  Just had to unexpectedly get a car since my wife got into an accident and insurance totaled it.  She was fine, car not so much.  Aaaaand we just paid it off 2 months ago.  Brutal timing.

We are in the same place. My wife's car was totaled on Friday. Currently shopping for a replacement for her.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this too! Glad she's OK!

I have 252,000 miles on my tundra.  Runs like a top.  I have been looking for a car for 6 years now.  When prices jumped up I held back and still holding off.

I paid 36K for my truck in 08.  That same truck would cost me double today and only have a 6 cylinder.  The reason we loved the Tundra was for it's simplicity.  Car & Driver and Motortrend hated that.

They sold 160k of them last year.  I honestly don't understand how...

Tundras were much better looking in 08. I’m not a fan of what Toyota has done to the Tundra and Tacoma. I also didn’t like what Nissan did to the Titan, before they phased it out.

New tires on my Grand Cherokee, $1300. Mavis. Even Jeep tells me to go to Mavis because it's cheaper lol.

40K mile service, Jeep quoted me $1600. We'll see. Now they're telling me I might not need all that. I printed every coupon they had lol.

They're telling me I NEED new front and back brakes, $2K, and two new batteries (stop/start batteries and main battery), $1K.

I don't hear a thing when I stop, and I didn't budget for another $3K lol, so all that's out for now. Maybe when I bring it back for another oil change in the spring.

I have never paid for one of those “scheduled maintenance” things in my life. Change your oil regularly and everything will be fine.

and go buy your own batteries at Costco.

New tires on my 2020 accord were $1200 at Mavis. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive. 70k miles and the only thing I have had to replace are the tires and the battery. Breaks are 80% worn and need to be replaced by the end of the year. My local mechanic quoted my $600 per axle, so $1200 to replace fronts and backs. With OEM parts.

Seems like a lot. I drive a 20 year old truck and my trusted mechanic told me my brakes are fine. Why? Because I coast to yellow/red lights, etc.

How many miles do you have on that jeep that you need new front and back breaks already?

Do you drive like a fighter pilot?

How long have you had the car that you need new batteries already?

All this is leading me to say this:

1-find a new dealership to go to

    or

    2-Sell that jeep

    Or

3-find a reputable mechanic to do your maintenance.

I do indeed drive like a fighter pilot lol.

It's 4 years old. 40K miles on it, largely highway from my commutes to work.

They said they "ran tests" on the brakes and the battery, and both were bad. Meanwhile I hear and feel nothing when I stop. Then they said the brakes will be fine until my next oil change.

I don't have a local guy, but a buddy that I trust works on his cars all the time. I'll get his opinion at some point.

Dealership quoted me $700.00 to replace the battery in our Dodge Durango. Since it is under the passenger seat, they said it would take 2.5 hours and the seat would have to be removed.

Bought the battery at local automotive supply shop for $200.00 and changed it myself in about 10 minutes using basic tools. I just had to raise the seat and move it forward using the power seat controls.

The dealership probably would have done it exactly the same way and charged me the full labor rate for the job.

Yeah they went from "we ran a diagnostic on your brakes, and they're bad", to "you'll be fine until your next oil change". Lol. Meanwhile I know what I hear and what I feel, and I hear and feel nothing.

I might do the batteries myself, or ask my buddy for help. He works on his cars all the time. I trust him, definitely with the batteries, but I'll probably go elsewhere for the brakes.

Good call. As long as they are relatively accessible, batteries are really straightforward.

I have a Chrysler 300c and that battery is under the trunk liner with the spare tire. Five minute job to swap it out.

Yeah, I looked at my service bill and $1000 of the $1700 was for labor. Crazy.
