  • Check out some of Sonic Youth' tunings!

You can also find LOTS of other interesting stuff here at this site. It really rocks!

Bumping this thread, because I think there are a lot of good tunings here for guitarists to try. :)

Is it just my guitar, or when anyone else tries to tune their high e to G, you always break a string?

    Erm ...

Well, even on 12 string guitars, the octave G is often about 10 or 11, the same gauge as an E, so this gauge should theoretically go up to G. You have to wind the string up slowly and carefully but it should reach G.

    Is you guitar neck/action/etc okay?

in reality its probably just my tuner that is cheap. Normally I get it by ear, but im just not trained to remember that note yet. Its probably telling me my G is flat when in reality its sharp

  • Open D rocks on an acoustic! Sounds so full and deep. Have that with an electric with standard tuning and the magic is ready to be made!

Low E stays the same (the bass string)
A one step up to B
D down to the same B
    G half a step down to F#
    B stays the same
high E down to the same B

fun with a capo, x marks fingerpositions you can use all the way up the neck.

It'll come with practice and with listening to songs that are in these keys.
Red House by Jimi Hendrix is in B, and if you can hear that in your head and hum it, you can tune your string to it. F# is the same key as if you had your guitar in DADGAD and put a capo on the fourth fret. If you can remember and hum that key also, you can do it too.

    :)

Neither do I, but a small chromatic tuner can do miracles. They don't have to cost much.

the bass note in the better man intro is f# (well the first is eHf#, but the second riff is)

Oasis-Supersonic, the intro is an f#

Get a tuner though, i dont know how else to help you. even one with just the 5 notes on the guitar can be manipulated to get alternate tunings

    Hello there, Pearlwax....

Have you a guitar handy? Now, try this. Tune your guitar to DADGAD.

    Try these shapes:

    0 0 0 2 0 0

    0 0 4 2 0 0

    2 2 0 0 0 2

    0 5 4 0 0 0

    5 5 5 4 0 0

    7 7 7 6 0 0

    9 9 9 7 0 0

    10 10 10 9 0 0

    12 12 12 11 0 0

    0 5 7 7 0 0

    0 10 12 12 0 0

There are some chords for you to start with. I haven't given you them in any progression, but you can configure them as you like.

    Good luck!

I might add, that was my very first post on this board.
