Klinghoffer - Necessary?

MilestoneMilestone Posts: 1,140
I like Josh Klinghoffer.  Quite a bit.  But my question is:  Do they really need to take him on tour?  Isn't it already overkill when Ed plays the 3rd guitar? Isn't Boom on keys? What's going on here?  I haven't seen PJ live since 2018.  Is he going to be on this tour?  Thank you.

  • Yes he’s going to be on the tour
He adds percussion, occasional guitar, and (especially) backing vox.
I don’t mind having him back there, but I don’t love when he does Purple Rain with them.

    I for one hope so.

He literally prevented 3 show cancellations in the last couple years, of course they should take him.

Not sure where the OP is coming from here. Josh is integral to this new generation of pj especially live. He offers great back up vocals and seems to understand when to play and when not to play. Not to mention his ability to jump in and save shows on the drums. I’m on team Josh!

There is literally zero downside to have all the intangibles that Josh brings on tour. Sure, Ed can be the 3rd guitar player, but he doesn't have to, and can now focus a bit more on vox. Sure, Boom plays the electric organ, but that is much different than playing keyboards. Need extra percussion, check. Really good background vocals, check. It really fleshes out the sound they are capable of in a live setting.

Oh, ok cool.  I honestly didn't know why he's there.  As I stated, I like Josh's work.  Especially with RHCP, solo Frusciante, Earthlings, ect.  Now I know that he's there to prevent PJ cancellations.

Yes.  Someone needs to play the shakers when they perform Hummus.

I'm also on Team Josh.  No hate here.  I just didn't think that 4 guitars were necessary.  But if he's there as a utility man, filling in for someone when ill, or adding some keys, vox, percussion, then I look forward to seeing this version of the band. Thanks!

So is Boom still part of the touring band? Zero mention of him in the DM credits had me wondering...

Josh is amazing.  Always a very talented musician.  I can hear his style of licks in Upper Hand verses.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but hearing Josh's' vocals on any song makes me cringe, I can't even listen to the Purple Rain cover which is sad, I love that the band loves him and that he adds to the live shows with his instrumentation but I just can't get into the vocals, I've tried but I'm just not a fan of his voice, but that's just me, and no one has to attack me and leave hateful comments, I'm just voicing my opinion,...

Wouldn't this be the case with 200 dollar nosebleed tickets also then? 🤔😝

I think they can add touring musicians anyway they like. Add a children's choir and Tori Amos on a grand piano. Change it up. Mix it up.

My only red line is - don't become an E-Street band rolling music theatre but keep as close as possible to the rock and roll path of Neil Young.

I would be more worried about constructed lamps for Eddie to swing around on at every show during a specific portion of Porch, than them having a cool extra musical flair.

Think Wreckage will definitely need Josh's vocals, not to mention those of a few more band members. I haven't seen them since the last pre-Covid show at Fenway so don't know if he's taken over some of the vocal legwork from Matt but assume that could be the case. Anyone able to confirm that?

I agree that if the band thinks he's necessary, then he's necessary.  He seems not only talent but enthusiastic, which is cool.

Also funny to me to hear the reference to "Purple Rain".  First time I listened to that song in its entirety was at St. Paul 2 last year, and I thought it was cool to cover and all but don't care for the song.  I've still yet to listen to Prince's original, but when I played the boot my girlfriend thought he did an awesome job.

I must admit I was also dubious but after seeing the band in 2022 in Amsterdam with Josh I was pleasantly surprised by how he added, not detracted from the set.

This band would not fuck around with some putz and let them in the inner circle.  They realize what they have built here.  Josh is an incredible musician and has many talents.  He is also a great insurance policy to fill in when needed.  He filled in on drums for Matt last tour when he had a personal matter.

At Chicago night 2 or Indy I would welcome him singing Buttercup backed by Stone or the whole band. I was bummed I missed it when him and Stone played it during the Pluralone opening set. Unfortunately he didn't play it at any of the shows we went to. I have watched it on Youtube and would have loved to see it live.

You took what I said completely out of context.  For what it's worth my opinion is the tickets are way too expensive for Europe.
My comment above is a musical observation. Not the same at all.
