Was the half bad like lightning bolt(album)/gigaton?
  • lastexitlondonlastexitlondon Posts: 13,875
I like gigaton. I found this wishy washy nothingy kind of ed songs . Not for me. First song is great. The 2 released are great. Stevie is good apart from that one sounded like Floyd. And several are petty esk.

@lastexitlondon if u could compare it to other albums what would be the best comparision? Or a mix of 2 albums perhaps?

Free tote bag and poster at Resident Records in Brighton - bags ran out quickly and only a few posters left. Very low key event as shop was still open and no checking of free tickets that were pre-bought.

I only heard it 1.5 times through but here's my take (entirely subjective of course, everyone will hear different things and have different reactions!):

    - First two songs are very strong rockers, especially enjoyed the riff of the first one
    - Some snippets of sounds, song structures & even chord/note sequences reminded me of other songs (Garden, Corduroy and Not For You in particular)
    - Some interesting soundscapes and I think a short ambient piece after 'Running'
    - As has been said by others, Mike and Matt in particular shine on this LP
    - Last track starts with a recognisable PJ album closer ambience/feel
    - Some gnarly bass sounds on it.
    - Didn't pay as much attention to Waiting for Stevie as was planning to but really liked what I heard of it, I think I remember this one having a very 'rock and roll' ending? (Much like when they play live and end songs)
    - There wasn't any track that I particularly didn't like but need to hear it properly to listen to the lyrics etc

everything you wrote only adds to my already sky high excitement.

I must stress though, when I say snippets I mean just that....some a couple of seconds long, some maybe a bit longer.

Chatting to my PJ obsessive pal after the event I suggested that it sounds as if Andrew Watt tried to make PJ think about elements of what past approaches to song structure/sound had worked so well and made particular songs fan favourites and then has combined that with modern day PJ.

I did think the drumming and riff in waiting for stevie reminded me of Soundgarden. That riff could  have been on badmotorfinger .I loved it. And the lyrics are great

Oh nice. I thought you were referring to Waiting For Stevie. That would be a good one two punch.

  • On first listen I think it was ok (except for Something Special) but nothing more for now, liked the two lead singles the best but maybe just more familiar with them.

Was nice to meet Rob too and have a little chat!  (The Boot was good too mate!)

Definitely going to give the cinema a miss and just stream it on Friday, well most of it.
