What are your priorities? Price or distance? On the Strip, off the strip or Downtown? These are within a 10-25 walk to the MGM Garden
    High end: Bellagio, Aria, Cosmopolitan
High Mid Tier: Casears, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Horseshoe, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Park MGM
Mid Mid Tier: Harrah's, The Flamingo, Linqu
Low Mid Tier: Best Western Casio Royal
    Budget: Excalibur and Luxor.

I visit Vegas infrequently but the Mid Mid tier have all been fine for me.
thank you for this. I am flying in from CO and looking for hotels at the moment. Trying to keep it under$250ish a night if possible

No problem. Just remember when you see a rate I can almost guarantee it will not include the resort fee which runs $40-$60 a day (and of course tax). Another tip would be to sign up for the member's club at MGM and Casears. It's free and you will get the lowest rates available to the general public. Rates that will not show up if you don't sign up and log in. I'm going later this year to see the Killers. It's a slow period but with the member's rate I'm paying $8.00 + $50 resort fee + tax. You won't get that during that week in May because of other events but you should same $20-$30 a night and they will give you like $10 buck of free play at the casino.
so signing up for the MGM member's club would be helpful? I'd love to not have to schlep too far after the show but I am looking at hotels along the monorail as well as it seems like that is a viable way to move around. My wife works and I spend some time in NYC so I appreciate public transportation, not needing to get and wait for an absurdly expensive Uber after the show is always a plus in my books.

MGM Grand Garden is like the only place that monorail gets close to. You can check out the Marriotts over by the convention center if you are taking it. Last I checked, it is like $5 per person, so just crossing the street to OYO and getting an Uber might be easier if there is a surge.

Don't get me started on why the monorail was never extended to the airport or simply put in the middle of the strip. You know, to make it useful.

When was that? Circus Circus was remodeled in about 2011. It's still not a high-end hotel by Strip standards, but it's aiming more at families, and it was perfectly fine after the remodel (I stayed there once when I had an event there). If you first stayed there before the remodel, I totally understand your take on it.

People have become so reliant on Uber and Lyft that they have forgotten about cabs, which are abundant in Vegas and not subject to surge pricing. Just remember that, if there's a long wait for a rideshare vehicle, you'll probably be able to hop right into a cab in front of any hotel, and you're probably not going that far so you're not going to end up paying much more for it.

And I second the recommendation here: if you're leaving a crowded event, walk across the street where there won't be a crush of people looking for rides. If you're heading north on the Strip, walk a couple of blocks north of MGM Grand. If you're headed south or west of the Strip, cross over to New York New York and get a car on the southbound side. If you're heading south or east, cross over to OYO. Basically, avoid getting in a car that needs to make a U-turn on the Strip. You'll add ten minutes and extra dollars to your ride. And the further good news is that, in mid-May, temperatures at night will be cool so you won't be saturated with sweat if you have to walk a little.

yea god forbid they connected public transportation to an airport or put closer to where I assume millions of people walk/travel a year on the strip. This will be my first Vegas trip, I couldn't care less about going to any casino, just want to come see PJ and have a reasonable place to lay my head and WFH the day between the shows.

There are public buses that run up and down the Strip regularly. The Deuce, as it's called, runs every ten-to-fifteen minutes and costs four bucks for a single ride, eight bucks for a 24-hour pass, and twenty bucks for a three-day pass.

Las Vegas is not a hard place to get around, especially if you're not planning on deviating from the Strip. There is actually a lot to do and see in Vegas that is off the Strip, but someone one a first-time visit will have plenty on the Strip to hold their interest. (When I go to Vegas, I drive up from L.A. With my car, I have complete freedom and flexibility to do things far and wide, from Red Rock National Recreation Area to the west, to Tule Springs Fossil Reserve to the North, to downtown, to great local restaurants out to the west Summerlin or east of the Strip on Paradise, to Town Square to the south. And, of course, the Pinball Museum!

For shopping for rates absolutely. From Harrah's going south (toward MGM) 90-95% of the hotels are either MGM or Caesar's properties.  It's an easy way to save at least 10% off the hotel rate. The problem with the PJ dates is Electric Daisy Carnival is in town at the same time. That's half a million people over three days. I'm sure Thursday would be a lot cheaper than Friday and especially Saturday.

They don’t really have perks unless you get enough points for status, which requires gambling and/or lots of room charges.

Just got back from Vegas. First time in about 15 years. What an absolute rip off of a city. I’d rather spend my money in NYC. Hard to believe that your money will go farther in NYC, but it’s true.

I first went to Vegas in 1995 and lived there for 15 years (until recently). It seems like the strip has now been optimized by MBAs to extract as much money as possible while you keep telling yourself you are having fun. IMHO, the end came when they started charging for parking.

And this is coming from someone who loves the city.

Parking at the bellagio and mirage were $20 a piece a day. What killed me was I couldn’t get a coffee maker in my room at either place. I spent a week there and my Starbucks bill for three of us was over $150. $9 coffees, insane.

Had the “pleasure” of going to LV a ton for work over the years.

I’ve stayed at a lot of strip hotels.  Fav high end is Waldorf. (No casino and I don’t gamble). It’s quiet.  Next would be Wynn or Cosmo.  Lots of action there.  Resorts World on north end is good too. Great dining options.

Four star recs would be Venetian or Park MGM. Park MGM is non smoking, which makes it stand out. Bavette’s Steak is outstanding as well. But pricey.

Cheaper would be Treasure Island or The Mirage.  They are ok.

I had to go on one days notice about a month ago. We would up at HGI in Henderson. It was great. $120 a night as there was a major convention in town and all the strip hotels were $500-600 each.  If you don’t mind a 20 min ride, there are options out east.

Yeah, not to mention the Starbucks line is sometimes 30 minutes in the morning. And I don't even like Starbucks.

I lived in Spring Valley for many years. The Orleans is actually really nice and a short ride to the arena. Great brewpub and other stuff inside. McMullen's across the street is a legit awesome Irish bar that has great music every night. I mostly just avoid the street as much as possible.

I forgot to mention Vdara. That's going to be a High Mid Tier but you can get it for an average of $260 (Wed-Sun). It doesn't have a casino (which is a plus for me) and it's 10 minutes from MGM Garden. It's right behind Aria and The Cosmopolitan and is an  MGM property.

I went in December to see U2. We had a similar situation, where every hotel was high priced due to an Amazon convention.

We stayed at Sahara, and I'd definitely go back there again.  Room and casino was clean and very nice. The casino wasn't very busy, so always easy to play. Got grandfathered on $10 craps each night, before they'd raise it to $15. Only downside was hard to find any cocktail waitresses.

Convenience: it's on the monorail, so easy to make your way up and down the strip.  I think the unlimited pass was under $25/day.
