I’m Going to Be a Dad!

My wife and I decided to start a family this year at ages 38 and 41, her and I respectfully.  We had planned on starting a family 4-5 years ago after she finished law school.  Unfortunately, life happened.  Halfway through law school my wife suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.  The cause we found out was due to Moyamoya disease.  Long story, short, she rehabbed a couple of months later, had bypass surgery two months after that as prevention for another (common procedure for Moyamoya).  I’ve been hesitant to see her go through a pregnancy.  My fear of her going through this hell again during labor kept me from being okay with trying.  Late last year we met with an OB who reviewed her medical history from her neurosurgeon and is confident she can go through labor with minimal chance of having another stroke.  So we are now 24 weeks in and are looking forward to Maddox Lloyd Thomas in December.  It’s the best thing to ever happen to me and I’m excited to be a father.
I wish I was a sacrifice, but somehow still lived on.

So far the pregnancy has gone really well.  I'm still worried about her dealing with labor, but our OB and neurosurgeon say as long as her blood pressure doesn't elevate significantly prior that it should go fine without any concern of another stroke.

Seeing what she went through to rehab from her stroke showed me a whole new vision of courage.

    Congrats.

It is a whole new frontier for sure.

Keep a planned C-section in the back of your minds. (I assume the Docs have thought of this as a possibility).
We did this with my son as my wife had a condition called placenta previa where the placenta is blocking the birth canal, so we had a C-Section scheduled about 2 weeks before her full term date, she never actually went into labor. Where labor could be a concern for your wife, this might be an option worth exploring.

We’ve discussed it a few times.  Our first OB mentioned the recovery from a C-Section being pretty rough.

I'm sure it varies depending on patient (and surgeon). Wasn't horrible for my wife. Couple days in the hospital then a couple weeks taking it easy after. But didn't really prevent her from any of the baby care.

This is really good to know.  We’re actually starting with a new OB next month (because we’re moving from Milwaukee to Madison in 2 weeks).  It’ll be a good time to revisit this option.
