Song Request for Austin: "I Believe in Miracles" For My Wife, a Transplant Survivor
Since we started dating years ago, my wife Regina has regularly been my "plus one" for PJ concerts. While she enjoys the music, she is not quite the diehard that I am, but she is always down for going to shows because she knows how much they mean to me. We have enjoyed numerous shows together and have traveled all over the country seeing many beautiful places and meeting many wonderful people in the process. While on our trip to Seattle in '18 for the Home Shows, she was noticeably fatigued and was feeling rundown. After seeing her doctor and undergoing numerous tests, she was eventually diagnosed with having a rare blood disorder called Aplastic Anemia, which would require a bone marrow transplant. These were extremely scary times for us and our children, then aged 10 & 7. As none of her 6 siblings were a match, she had to appeal to the national donor registry, which is run by the wonderful people at bethematch.org. She matched with only 5 possible donors on the worldwide registry, 3 of which then went in for further testing. Our "miracle" ended up being a 54 year-old man from Germany named Achim, who selflessly donated his bone marrow to Regina so she could continue living life. We are so grateful for this man and words will never be enough to thank him. This past summer we were fortunate enough to travel to Heinebach, Germany to meet him and his lovely family in person. It was incredibly emotional and absolutely beautiful!
So, Regina will once again be my "plus one" at the Austin shows in September. I would love it if they played The Ramones' "I Believe In Miracles" for Regina and Achim, not only to bring attention to them but also to bring attention to bethematch.org, which without them a transplant would not have been possible. If anyone is interested in joining the registry and being someone else's "miracle", please go to their website at bethematch.org. It is incredibly easy to join and could lead to saving someone's life, like my wife! Attached is a picture of Achim and Regina, from a German newspaper from when they did an interview to help spread the word about joining the registry.
