'Ron, I love that you're back': Trump and DeSantis put an often personal primary fight behind them

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are signaling to donors that they are putting their rivalry behind them after a contentious and often personal primary fight.

DeSantis convened his allies this week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to press them to raise money to support Trump, making the case over a seafood and steak dinner that they need to work together to prevent Democratic President Joe Biden from winning a second term. The governor and about 30 people then spent Thursday morning in a hotel conference room raising money for an outside group that supports the former president's 2024 White House campaign.

Trump called into the gathering to thank members of the group for their work, according to four people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to publicly discuss the private session and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In what three people present described as a warm and gracious call to the group that was heard over speakerphone, Trump praised DeSantis and the effort, saying “Ron, I love that you’re back.”

A reconciliation helps both of them. Trump is trying to make up fundraising ground against Biden while DeSantis hopes to preserve a potential future White House run for which Trump's supporters could be key.

DeSantis and his top donors raised more than $3 million on Thursday for the super political action committee Right for America, backed by big Republican donors such as Ike and Laurie Perlmutter, who have agreed to match at least a portion of the DeSantis team’s fundraising rather than funneling money directly to Trump's campaign.

That arrangement, reached after talks between the Trump and DeSantis camps, is designed to address concerns among DeSantis supporters about their money going to pay the former president’s legal bills, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to discuss the private talks. Trump notably blessed the structure when he called into the group's meeting Thursday.

“This is where I want you to focus,” Trump said in a roughly 15-minute call, according to a senior political adviser to DeSantis who was not authorized to publicly discuss the private meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

DeSantis’ decision to push money to the PAC instead of giving directly to Trump’s campaign has raised eyebrows among some Trump campaign officials, according to a person familiar with the former president's campaign thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the arrangement.

Right for America is competing for donors with MAGA Inc., the chief super PAC backing Trump. Such groups are prohibited from directly coordinating with a presidential campaign, something that hamstrung DeSantis during his presidential run due to conflicts between his campaign and his support of Never Back Down, the largest super PAC backing DeSantis’ candidacy.

Other supporters of both men support the arrangement. Right for America is run by Sergio Gor, a longtime Trump ally who is close to the former president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. The two run Winning Team Publishing, which published two of the former president’s books.

“We are thrilled by the support we are receiving from Governor DeSantis," Gor said in a statement. "We look forward to ensuring President Donald Trump is elected in November.”

Some DeSantis donors had been reluctant to give to Trump because they worried their money would help pay Trump’s lawyers in his criminal cases instead of being used directly to focus on beating Biden.

A number of big-name Florida contributors who have given to DeSantis remain hesitant about contributing to efforts to support Trump, said Al Hoffman, a Palm Beach County Republican donor and former Republican National Committee finance chair.

“I know that there are Republican conservative, big-money donors that are very reluctant to endorse Trump,” said Hoffman, who was also chairman of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s 2002 reelection campaign.

DeSantis endorsed Trump when he dropped out of the race and promised in a face-to-face meeting with the former president in April to work for his campaign. The 45-year-old governor, who has won two terms and pushed a longtime swing state increasingly to the right, may run for the White House again and would need the backing of Trump voters in a future Republican primary.

DeSantis called his allies to Fort Lauderdale this week to raise money for Trump, telling them on Wednesday night that they needed to work to prevent a second Biden term.

The meeting was the kickoff for what is expected to be a coast-to-coast fundraising effort by DeSantis allies, with upcoming events likely in Texas, California, Washington state and perhaps New York.

Trump and DeSantis have also discussed a role for the governor at the Republican National Convention. Aides to DeSantis said it was Trump’s suggestion and was not contingent on any fundraising effort on DeSantis’ part.

Donors who discussed the Thursday event were struck by the collegiality between Trump and DeSantis during the call. One person who spoke on condition of anonymity about the closed-door gathering called the conversation “very gracious” and noted that Trump and DeSantis talked about golf, a favorite Trump pastime.

DeSantis vetoes bill to improve public warnings about bacteria contaminating beaches, public waterways

    Anthony Man
    9 - 11 minutes

Gov. Ron DeSantis has vetoed legislation that would have required health warnings about bacterial contamination and made it easier for swimmers, boaters and anyone else in or around the ocean and waterways to learn if there’s something dangerous in the water.

Under the current, haphazard system, people sometimes don’t know about things like sewage that can flow into the water after torrential rains or stem from broken pipes and other spills.

The Safe Waterways Act (House Bill 165) would have required:

    • Health advisories from the state Department of Health if water quality off beaches and in other water bodies, such as lakes and rivers, did not meet standards, according to a House staff analysis.
    • Closing access to affected waters if deemed necessary “to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.”
    • Cities, towns, villages or counties to notify the state of contamination and post signs in the area.

“We need to let people know as best we can what’s in the water before they jump in,” said state Rep. Peggy Gossett-Seidman, a Palm Beach County Republican. “We need to be able to look it up easily.”

Gossett-Seidman said said she’d like to see a website that shows all beach warnings and closures, a toll-free number people can call to check (she suggested 426, for H20) and “a big beach sign reporting what’s happening.”

Shark attacks get massive public attention. But Gossett-Seidman said her research found that more people are sickened — and die — from vibrio, a bacteria that can flourish in coastal waters, especially in warmer months, than from shark attacks. It can lead to other diseases, including skin rashes, lesions and lung issues.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suffered a string of defeats in school board races in several counties on Tuesday.

The Republican governor, who has sought to reshape his state's education system by regulating how schools deal with subjects such as race, sexual orientation and gender, threw his support behind 23 school board candidates last month.

A majority of those candidates lost their races on Tuesday.

Asked for comment, DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern pointed to his post on X, formerly Twitter, celebrating the wins of DeSantis-backed candidates in Duval County.

"There were A LOT of uphill battles in historically blue districts today, but you don't shift the culture by only supporting winnable races," he wrote. "Flipping the Duval County School Board is a win for students and parents in a historically blue county."

In Pinellas County, three challengers endorsed by DeSantis and the local chapter of Moms for Liberty had hoped to flip the school board to a conservative majority. But school board Chair Laura Hine and another incumbent, Eileen Long, held off the DeSantis-backed candidates.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Hine had 69 percent of the vote, while DeSantis-backed Danielle Marolf had 30 percent, according to preliminary results. Long had secured 54 percent of the vote, over the 45 percent won by Erika Picard, who was endorsed by DeSantis.

Much of the debate in the school races focused on parental rights, a movement that grew out of tensions over how to handle the pandemic in schools, but that is now centered on how children are taught about history, race and other subjects.

Long said the results were a rebuke of DeSantis' agenda.

"People want sanity. People want common sense. And people believe we should educate everyone," Long told The Associated Press. "The people have spoken."

In another race for an open seat on the Pinellas board, DeSantis-backed candidate Stacy Geier is set to face Katie Blaxberg in a November runoff after no candidate cleared 50 percent of the vote.

In neighboring Hillsborough County, two incumbents that DeSantis wanted voted out—Nadia Combs and Jessica Vaughn —held onto their seats. They fended off challenges from Layla Collins and Myosha Powell, both endowed by DeSantis.

In Sarasota County, Liz Barker defeated Karen Rose, an incumbent candidate endorsed by DeSantis.

And in Pasco County, DeSantis-backed Alison Crumbley, another incumbent, lost to Jessica Wright.

In Indian River County, incumbent Kevin McDonald, who was appointed to the board in April by DeSantis, lost to David Dyer. Meanwhile, incumbent Peggy Jones held onto her board seat despite a challenge from DeSantis-backed Robert MacCallum, another DeSantis-backed candidate.

DeSantis-backed Derek Barrs lost to Janie Ruddy in Flagler County. Nate Spera, another DeSantis-backed candidate, lost to incumbent Jennifer Anne Richardson in St. Lucie County.

Only six of the candidates backed by DeSantis won their races, although some are heading for runoff contests in November.

In Brevard County, DeSantis-backed John Thomas won his race against Amber Yantz, while the race between DeSantis-backed incumbent Matt Susin and Avanese Taylor is headed to a runoff.

DeSantis-backed candidates Tony Ricardo and Melody Bolduc also celebrated victory in Duval County. But incumbent Cindy Pearson is set to defeat Becky Nathanson, the former chair of Duval Moms for Liberty who was backed by DeSantis.

In Lee County, DeSantis-backed Bill Ribble won a seat on the school board and DeSantis-backed Melisa Giovanelli kept her seat. A race for a another seat will see DeSantis-backed Vanessa Chaviano face Sheridan Chester in a runoff.

And in Martin County, De-Santis backed incumbent Marsha Powers won her race.

Mark Cioffi, the DeSantis-backed candidate in Hernando County, is heading for a runoff after failing to clear 50 percent of the vote. Mary Blanco, a DeSantis appointee in Miami-Dade County, is also heading for a runoff in her race after not securing at least 50 percent of the vote.

Donna Brosemer, DeSantis' candidate for a seat on the Volusia County School Board, will go head to head against incumbent Carl Persis in a November runoff.

Well, all he has to say is people will be suffering and for them to be patient as he works to get them relief. And then he won’t be criticized for sending his resources out of state and not calling them back when he knew which storm he was being asked about.

Way to be a jerk, Desantis

    From Cox Richardson's letter today:

People in Florida are evacuating before Hurricane Milton is expected to hit the state’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday evening, bringing tornadoes, high winds, a dramatic storm surge, and upwards of 15 inches of rain. Milton grew from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in a little over a day, fed by water in the Gulf of Mexico that climate change has pushed in some places to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius) higher than normal. Veteran Florida meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales choked up as he called it “horrific.”

President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Florida, enabling the federal government to move supplies in ahead of the storm’s arrival, but the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, has refused to take a call from Vice President Kamala Harris about planning for the storm. When asked about DeSantis’s refusal at today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noted that the president and vice president have reached out to give support to the people of Florida.

As for DeSantis, “It’s up to him if he wants to respond to us or not. But what we're doing is we’re working with state and local officials to make sure that we are pre-positioned to make sure that we are ready to be there for the communities that are going to be impacted. We are doing the job… to protect the communities and to make sure that they have everything that is needed." When asked about DeSantis’s snub, Harris answered: “It’s just utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish, and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.”

We have two two families of relatives and two families of friends in Milton's path. I'm always a bit worried when it hurricane season but Milton is hugely concerning.

  • A lot of bootlicking going on. What is it with the principal standing under your shoulder while you provide updates on hurricane preparations and eventual response? Gotta make sure there’s no mention of climate change?
