Is the second encore gone for good?

The second encore has been regularly part of the PJ experience since 1998. With the 2022 shows in the shadow of covid and possibly the spectre of age entering, the band dialed back.

With that said, now that covid has died down and the guys have played the first tour of gigaton, do you think we'll continue to see 20-25 song show or will they stretch out a bit more and bring back the second encore and 25-30 songs (maybe a shorter second encore compared to 2013-2018)? Curious about your thoughts.

I hope not but sadly think it is.

Funny enough it really is the first encore that got eliminated. The traditional second encore took its spot making the ending to the show even more predictable than in the past.

I think it’s gone. And the encore during the last tour was the biggest disappointment for me., except for Camden.

Yes. My hypothesis is that it’s to save Ed’s voice. He’s no spring chicken anymore.

Ed's voice, Mike's arms, Matt's arms and legs. I think this is what they've decided to do to minimize the wear and tear.

And I’d be 100% on board with this if they actually toured. But ……

I wish it wasn't, but I fear it is...but you never can tell with the band.  I think their age has caught up.

I think they should play a song for every ten bucks a pair of tickets cost

Sadly probably for arena shows. If they do stadiums again in the future it might come back.

Unfortunately you can safely head towards the tunnels when alive hits and just hang in the tunnel.  See if they close with ritfw/yb/indifference and hit the road. Maybe it will change this round

Got to hang around long after til they throw you out to pick up stage garbage (picks, setlists, used tissues, guitar strings) You know...
  • turning into the stones...at least they still change the setlist. be thankful for that.

I believe it's gone. We were so spoiled since that 2003 tour. I'm thankful they're still making music and touring periodically.

Lot's of surprises were tucked into that 2nd encore.
  • Anything’s possible. They clearly approached last year really cautiously, hopefully if they can have these 9 shows with no band members sick or with voices blown out, they’ll get some confidence to stretch out over time.

I think the thing which made last year’s setlists slightly dissatisfying was the combination of 22-24 songs + so many from Ten. When there’s 30 songs, playing all the hits every night doesn’t feel like a big deal. When the most obscure track in a show is Garden, that chafes a bit.

I always enjoyed the slowed down first encore, which usually started with just Ed doing a song with an acoustic guitar or the band sitting at the beginning of the encore.. sadly, probably just a fond memory now...

I’m the same age as these guys and sometimes even when the mind is willing the body just doesn’t want to hear it.  I’m just thrilled they’re still doing something.  Leaving PJ20 we thought we’d never see them again.  We promised ourselves that we would just try to see them as much as possible because someday it will end.  So 1 encore, no encore, we’ll keep going.

I think it might be gone for good. I selfishly hope they stretch the encore a little at the last Austin show of the tour. I would be OK with the shortened set if they threw in a little more "surprises". Unfortunately, at this stage in their career i think they feel obligated to play the "hits" for the first timers and casual fans. I hope i am wrong and pleasantly surprised.

I’m not expecting more than 2022 but I’m hoping for it.  9 shows in 3 weeks isn’t exactly exhausting but it would be foolish to go in thinking it’ll be more than 22-24 songs a night.  Hope they prove us wrong!

I believe it’s in the 22-25 range from now on unless it’s a special circumstance like playing Chicago/Seattle or where there’s some real special connection.

yes and that's fine with me...although it does still get me that the setlists are shorter and they still play covers.

But I'm just happy they are still at it. Whatever they want to do I'll buy a ticket.

Hahaha no, not really.  Having kids, college, jobs, etc. we didn’t get to travel so PJ20 was our first time we were able….and my husband had a fever of 104 when we left so it felt more like it would be our last time.  I didn’t say it would be their last concert.

I don't think the band can handle such long shows anymore (neither can a lot of their fans, hahaha). It's just age - you get worn out more easily. That's life. I'm good with that. Honestly, I think a 2.5 - 3hr show is too long no matter what. The crowd starts to wain and weaken, alcohol sales ended a long time ago and some people are getting hungover, lol, and the non-megafans have had enough and some even start to leave before the show's over. a 2 - 2.25 hour show is ideal IMO.

I just did the math. All in with the ticket, flight, and hotel for St Paul, I'm putting out 50 bucks a song if they play 22.  I have 24 hours to cancel the flight. I'm gonna sleep on it and see if I still think it's worth it tomorrow.
