    This sounds a lot like a Hilary era underestimation of maga power. There is one critical word in the definition of cult that is being ignored. Edit, take a closer look at the polls. The vast majority of Republicans, far far greater than 30%, believe all of the Trump indictments are bogus

    I believe it. Most of them, whether easily targeted "angry about nothing" people susceptible to populism or more rational "less government; lower taxes" people, listen exclusively to right wing "news." And those outlets don't really survive if they don't peddle outrage and party-first nonsense. Some of it is going to resonate with some of them.

    There's something to be said for the days of newspapers and 30-minute nightly news programs...there was so much less ability to find echo chambers and so much less time/space for outrage and conspiracy theories.

    Sorry to say this in reply specifically to your comment as this is common sentiment here. Calling maga a cult is misleading, as trump is likely to receive upwards of 75 million votes. Cult implies a small religious group, maga is far from that.

    I’d say the major religions technically have the ‘biggest cult’ battle won. In comparison, the GOP are relatively few in number. Maybe equal in destructive potential at this point though. 
    When I was a sophomore or something in college, I was in this historical writing class and I wrote a long paper with the hypothesis that LDS was really just a cult, albeit a large one.  It caused considerable consternation and anger from several members of the class.  It was a small class and everyone had to read everyone's work and discuss.  I learned never to posit that again, not academically.  Too sensitive. 
    I always felt that LDS was a con game that got out of control.
    Then Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven came out which confirmed my theory.
    Then I had the opportunity to talk to him and it really confirmed my theory of a con game that ended up in a place that Joseph Smith could never have prophesied. 
    So yes a cult that's for sure.
    But some could argue that all religions have cultish aspects.
