It’s also a matter of credibility. For years the Dems have been beating the “Biden is cognitively fine”, and to just switch gears like that would plummet the trust in the party.
I think Brandon is cognitively fine, just old and slow with a speech impediment. Clearly he sucked last night and it was a poor performance but I don’t believe his decision making as it relates to pressing issues or who he’s surrounded himself with or what he cares about and prioritizes is an issue. The image as the doddering befuddled old guy? Yup.

Then moderate swing voters would be more comfortable with sleepy Joe knowing a solid backup is right there to invoke the 25th since Biden is essentially incapacitated.
