Massive 'Hole' Spotted on Sun's Surface. Know What It Means For Earth
Coronal holes allow solar wind to escape more readily into the space.

Scientists from American space agency NASA have spotted a massive black region on the Sun, which is 20 times larger than our Earth, according to a report in Vice News. Called the "coronal hole", it looks like certain potion of our Sun has disappeared. The appearance of the hole prompted US federal agency NOAA to issue an alert for geomagnetic storms. According to news.com.au, the gaping hole is unleashing solar winds of 2.9 million kmph towards Earth, which will hit our planet on Friday.

The situation is being monitored to assess the impact these solar winds will have on our planet, said the outlet. The continuous flow of charged particles form the Sun are known to impact the Earth's magnetic field, satellites, mobile phones and GPS.

    sounds like a lot, but i have no idea. considering that actual winds on earth going over 70 mph can cause damage. i am not sure what happens in our atmosphere when these solar winds hit though.

    I don't have it in front of me right now, but I read an article a while back that explained that the power outages can be reduced or avoided by grounding power stations.  Unfortunately, we have been too damn cheap to do much that way and most are still vulnerable. 

    On a more positive note, this event might produce some spectacular light displays for our Australian friends:

    The unexpected event started on Thursday night and its effects are expected to be felt on Friday night, with visible auroras possible in Tasmania and Victoria.

    Solar and stellar physics expert, Dr Hannah Schunker, said the world had become “a lot more reliant on technology and power since then”.

    “So we just don’t know the full impact of what a huge solar storm could be these days,” the University of Newcastle physicist said.

    “They can generate currents that can interfere with electronics. This can mean anything from interfering with satellites in orbit around the Earth, down to affecting power lines on the surface.

    “If the storm is very strong, it can interfere with your power, it could completely take out a power system, so there’d be a localised blackout, if there was enough damage at a power station.”
