Just a Girl at the Apollo / show #150

  • It hasn’t really sunk in to my yet that it’s Apollo week. So many emotions from winning tickets, then it gets canceled, we enter a pandemic, over 2 years later, that show gets rescheduled. Been over 4 years since my last show personally. How does that happen? Time is fleeting. What we have left is a gift. Cherish #149 and I’ll see you at #150.

    first show Randall’s Island 9/29/96

  • Call it confirmation bias, but Apollo will be show #150 for you and the theatre capacity seats 1506. Coincidence? Yes, absolutely. But thinking positively is a life hack.

Had to pull out the first time I was exposed to Just a Girl, or any "demos and rarities" at all for that matter.  Ah, good ole $50 boots

I saw that at Brazilian record shop here in Orlando in like 95/96? And yep, it was $59.99 lol. If I didn't already have this bad boy at the time, I would've saved up for it

Man....these last two posts just hit me different. The mid-90s unofficial bootleg era was special. Core memories of working weekends just to save up enough to buy one from Record Exchange here in Cleveland before someone else could get to it.

I think my first introduction to Just A Girl was on "Pearls of Wisdom" (not to be confused with "More Pearls of Wisdom") and most likely went by the title "Girl" on that one.

Nice! Later wound up with these that had it as well. It was (and I guess still is) a sickness

  • Wow!  Love these flashbacks to the early '90's bootleg era.  We had a local record store that would sell the 2-disc ones for ~$50-60.
Bought a Pearl Jam one called "Burning" that had the 4/3/94 Atlanta show and some cool fillers like Bee Girl, Believe You Me, Dock of the Bay, and Hunger Strike on the end of disc 2.  Listened to that more than any of the studio stuff back in the day.
Had another I think was called "Checkpoint Charlie" that was a bootleg of the Berlin '96 show.
Amazing how hard it was to access recordings to live shows back then compared to now.

The current state of music consumption definitely has us all spoiled. Kids nowadays have NO IDEA, lol.

Hell, some record store in Connecticut took the first few Xmas singles, played them on a record player & recorded them all to blank cassettes & sold the mixes for $10 (yeah, I bought one)😅

    Please, more, I love it!

3/17/95 "Down Under" was my first "import," the day after Soldier Field I think my parents felt bad for not taking me, so I was able to get that at Discs and Dats in St. Charles, IL.

"In Rock We Trust" (Bridge 94, another Eagle Records joint) was a favorite of mine.  I knew nothing about the Bridge School benefit at the time but knew I loved the recording and had to experience it (and luckily hit every PJ bridge appearance from 1999 to 2010).
  • Happy eve of the tour!  At long last, this East Coast run is set to take place.  I know...another song request thread, and a ridiculous, near impossibility at that.  Afterall, it's only been 11,555 days since Just a Girl was last played, by Mookie Blaylock, and on the West Coast the 2 times it was played on record (thanks livefootsteps.org you're the best).  But hey, if they can bust out Evil Little Goat or Out of My Mind anything is possible, maybe?

I am beyond lucky to have won tickets for show by hammering away at the phone lines for weeks back in February 2020 and that the show has been rescheduled (unfortunately I don't have an open +1).  I am so grateful for the chance to witness this belated Gigaton celebration at this tiny historic venue.  If they were ever to bring it back, I think that is the perfect night to start, with a large PJ-only live audience in person and on air, broadcast for all to hear.

Oh and if things go as planned with Toronto, Apollo will be show #150 for me, so thought I'd sneak that in.  What a ride it's been, I can't thank this band enough for all of the joy they have brought me, the friends I have made along the way, the places I have visited, all that jazz.  More self indulgent reflection to follow later.

    Thanks for reading.

This post had me thinking how certain shows take on special meaning for people for different reasons. Obviously #150 has a "milestone" meaning and made me curious about other ones like #50 and #100 for you. What were those shows?

  • The Apollo show will be special for sure. I can be there at a moment's notice should someone have an extra ticket. Doesn't hurt to put it out to the universe =)

Thanks for asking!  Based on the ole spreadsheet, looks like #50 was in Florida for the Vote for Change tour.  #100 was PJ20 (night one), that was a great night.

Coincidentally enough, the Vic was #75, and it's looking like going to have that same group attending the Apollo together.  Lucky bastards that we are.

Looks like check in starts at 7, show at 9.

What were your guys' first shows?
    Hartford 98.
  • Although I think we can all agree Just A Girl is still a long shot, I wonder how Vegas would be moving the odds since you first posted this thread after seeing the first 3 setlists of this tour leg so far? I don't think I've seen a single cover song listed yet and lots of Ten-era heavy sets.

I've been meaning to ask someone about Kissimmee '04 & how it was. I've always had to shy away from it because I had to make the Judgement of Solomon that night 👀

Good luck, hope you can find a way in!

Looks like check in starts at 7, show at 9.
    Me too! Thanks

OUT OF MY MIND HELL YEAH
I was lucky enough to hear that at the philly 10/31 show and again at Fenway in 2018. LOVE that song. Guess I'll turn to music instead....

Happy eve of the tour!

    Do tell....

It was pretty awesome. Pretty sure it was the longest show of the tour. Wound up with second row off to the side, it pretty much turned into GA with all the people that crammed in. Timeless Melody was a highlight for sure.
